Replacing leaf springs

Hi all,

My restoration is coming quite nicely now. I am looking at replacing the leaf springs and a friend of mine suggested I go for parabolic springs to give it a bit more lift. Is this correct and will I need to replace anything else if these springs do give more lift?

There's a lot of options and the manufacturer will tell you what else you need. I got GBSprings. They seem to be good and give a slight lift. They recommend regular shocks but I'd say they're just a bit too bouncy and could maybe do with a bit of extra damping...though they're perfect with an extra cwt or so in the boot.

Are you planning on mainly road or off?

Mainly off road use but there will be the odd bit of towing on roads too. My other thought would be a full coil conversion. I haven't priced that up yet though.

they sell defenders for that.

rocky mountain parabolics are recommended as good off road use, so worth considering. I've fitted them on mine, but haven't finished the other jobs yet so haven't tried them out.

I'll leave the Defenders for the time being. After reading this morning on coil conversions it sounds like a lot of work so back to the parabolics!

I was planning on ordering a few bits from Paddocks but their parabolics are made by GME.

The Rocky Mountain one are supposed to be the dogs bollocks and you can get them in a set with fancy shockers and all the shackles and stuff.

If you put coil springs on you will be shunned by all right thinking people....

The Rocky Mountain kit looks awesome! Not a bad price either considering. Could be the answer. I don't want to raise it up sky high but a couple of inches higher to allow bigger wheels and tyres would be good.

i was dead happy ordering from there. He'll only sell over the phone so he can discuss exactly what you need before selling it, and they arrived the very next day.

to me they look like they're well made and the were easy to fit as i got all the new shackles, bolts and hoops. which was good as i had to cut the old one off.
apart from never having driven on them i really recommend them.

A previous owner fitted them Rocky Mountain ones with those fancy shocks, and it's much more comfy than the last landy I had, with rusted leaf springs on the front and crap bruit part on the back, not sure about it been any higher but I think you can use extended shackles to gain an inch or 2

you don't need paras to fit large tyres unless your standard leaves have sagged badly

235/85x16 or 7.50x16 tyres on 6.5" rims (anr1534) fit nicely

My standard springs look alright I think but as the tub is off and I'm restoring everything from the ground up I thought it could be an option to replace/upgrade. My rear springs have 4 springs so I believe these have come from a 109 at some point. Pretty still on an 88.
