Whilst I had the intercooler pipes off, had a feel of the end of the turbo, and there is some movement of the turbo shaft. The engine is in a Defender, but came from a Disco, and we don't know its age or true mileage.
My question is if anybody has replaced a 300tdi turbo lately? Just after recommendations of makes, suppliers, where to buy (eBay?), etc.
I will be doing the job myself, and I live in Flintshire (North Wales) if anybody knows any good places around the area.
Thanks for your time.

The shaft will have a slight amount of play as it normally floats in a bath of oil when the engine is running. A little bit of radial movement if fine as long as the disk doesn't rub on the case, there should be no axial play. If the I/C only has a little oil build up done worry (its normal) and just keep using it. Lots of pooling oil = trouble.

Agreed 100% :) Just to reinforce the above - a turbo "bearing" is the engine oil pressure fed to the bush the turbo shaft spins in. Thus, axial play will let this oil escape, and eventually lead to an engine runaway - obviously very bad.....

Radial play, provided it's not excessive is just the "space" for the engine oil to fill when the engine is running. IME once the thing is out of spec on radial "play" - the axial play will be evident, and the downstream pipework will be very oily, and getting worse !!

How the turbo has been treated is more important than the mileage IMHO - regular oil changes, and proper starting and shutdown procedures will make a turbo last more or less indefinitely.

I replaced mine two weeks ago. Very easy job. the hardest part is undoing the 4 bolts that bolt the CHRA to the exhaust, nothing that some serious heat cannot shift. Buy a cartridge from a reputable source. i got mine from turbo rebuilds and cannot praise them enough. The unit was manufactured by Mellett, a British OEM manufacturer.

I covered its replacement in this thread:
