Disco 2 Removing head lining

My sunroof is leaking and rather than seal its I was going to get it repaired. To cut out some of the cost however I was going to remove the headlining myself.

Wondered if anyone has done this and if so how long it took and how hard it was?
 
Mines a Disco 1 so don't know how different it is, but only took an hr to remove it . just carefully take out the clips and screws and it came out the back easy .
 
If that's South-West Sunroofs then that's the same chap I used to do both of mine (the rear wasn't leaking at that point, but it was only a matter of time). If so, I can recommend him.
He doesn't drop the headlining, he removes the finisher strip between the lining and sunroof to get access and then uses a right-angle drive on his leccy screwdriver to undo the screws that hold it to the roof. Quite nifty, I mentally slapped my forehead for not thinking of doing it that way!
He repaired the drain tube spigots, replaced the glass to frame seal and then but a good bead of mastic between the frame a the roof. So no leaks now, and he was quick and tidy.
He might be intending to swap out the whole sunroof to save a little time, as he did with mine, but I noticed the replacement had gone a bit manky around the surround so I elected to keep mine - although the one he had might not have rattled when opened like mine does! Anyway, take a good look at it, you might be getting a better unit than the one you have already.

How many coins did that set you back?
 
I think it was about £300 for both sunroofs, including travel. Sounded reasonable when I though you had to take the roof lining out to do it, maybe not so much when realised I could probably have done it myself! Still, I was new to the car so didn't know as much about it as I do now (thanks mostly to reading this forum) and to be honest I just didn't want the hassle, so I was prepared to pay to make the problem go away!.

Probably an hour to strip out the trim and then the headlining. I took out one sunroof at a time, stripped it down, cleaned and reassembled/re-seated, no leaks :).

Took me a lot longer to put everything back together but was worth it, all that was 3 Disco 2's ago. D2's I've had since then I've used gaffer tape to seal up the sun roof, I've never quite understood why you would need a sunroof in an air conditioned car o_O

Time and somewhere to do it. I live in central London so have to do this all on a street. In this weather if it takes time my car gets flooded. It's far easier to get someone else to do this and let me deal with the other more manageable things
 
Fair enough but I can't understand why it cost's £300 for a days labour and a tube of sealant, perhaps I should come out of retirement and earn in a day what I currently get in a month :D
I'm not getting them sealed, i'm getting them repaired. I have air con but I like the option of having the sun roofs open for fresh air!

You dont seal them UP with silicone, you remove the cartridge and seal between the roof and cartridge.
There is a factory fitted seal that its as much use as tits on a motorbike:D over time is flattens.
As said a tube of silicone and half a days labour and job done

Did I say "seal them up with silicone"? If I did then it's my poor English grammer, perhaps I should have said "reseat the frame", because that's what I did when I did mine ;)
 
Well, there's always going to be a debate on DIY or paying someone else to do it, whatever the particular job is. I'd only just got the car and, as I said, I didn't know any better at the time. If I'd wanted to drive from Farnham to his workshop Taunton or wherever he's based, it would have cost less for the actual job - but a good whack of fuel to get there and back, plus time in travelling.
I suppose we all have our 'you must be nuts to pay someone to do that' jobs - one of mine is brake pads! I felt very smug some years back when I found out Renault wanted £100 to change the front pads on our Clio, and I'd just done it for £14!
