My alternator pulley gave up on the way home from work the other day. I have a replacement, but I have minimal tools, so I'm having trouble getting the old one off and new one on.

It's the Marelli type where you need to get an 8mm Allen key on the bolt and a 24mm spanner on the nut, only I can't fit both on at once. The only 24mm I have that will fit is a socket, which you can't put an Allen key through the middle of, and I don't have access to a vice.

Anyone have any wise words or bright ideas on how to go about it?

Already thought of this. Sadly, it looks like I won't be able to go out and get any additional bits until after Christmas, and there's small chance of anything getting delivered before then.

To make it worse, Christmas plans rely quite heavily on having a working vehicle.

Not that I can get to whilst they're open. Just spotted the next day delivery on their website though, so I'll give that a try.

So take the alternator and new pulley to a back st garage and ask em to change em over for you - for a drink ;)

Would if I could, but I'm working 7-7 every day until Christmas eve.

It would have to be a pretty big drink to convince any of the garages round here to stay open late enough for me to get there after work.

Looks like I'll just have to bodge something and/or pray the Halfords delivery gets here in time.

That's the bugger of it - I can't really see properly until I get it off, but it looks like some kind of washer/spacer has shattered. This is the first time I've ever looked at a 300tdi alternator, so I don't have any point of reference, but it's definitely something between the pulley and the nut (I can tell because there are still a few bits of it stuck in there).

You could try holding the pulley with a strap wrench and undoing the nut with the socket, is there a squeaking sound coming from the alternator with the engine running?

Holding the pulley doesn't do anything, if you hold it and turn the nut it just spins the alternator.

There was a squeaking sound for a few days before it went, but it sounded more like it was coming from the serpentine belt tensioner (made more probable by the fact that spraying a bit of WD40 on the tensioner alleviated it for a while).

Well it looks like you'll have fun removing the pulley then as the pulley shouldn't turn independantly of the alternator - if it did - the alternator wouldn't spin :)

Good luck with the box spanner and long allen key

can you hold the shaft with the allen key and belt the corners of the nut with hammer and cold chisel .... might need three hands though.

i think there should be a woodruff key keying the pulley to the shaft.?
