Hi. I was wondering if anybody knows what the additional bracket/tab is for on the removable cross member ( See pic) . Just starting to build up my Series 3 galv chassis and want to be sure to get the cross member in correctly. TIA Cheers

I have seen some Series before where they have a tie bar between the crossmember and the gearbox. It looked like it limited movement in the mounting rubbers when the hand brake was engaged.
 
Most military vehicles with the removable cross member had as an engine steady tie rod.

Gearbox Tie Bar

I've always fancied a tie bar for the gearbox. I have a set of the softer engine and gearbox mounts from Glencoyne and these exacerbate the problem of the engine and gearbox moving when the handbrake is applied. I don't have the additional bracket on the gearbox cross member and I didn't fancy...

Interesting . Thanks for the reply. Im going to contact the supplier and see what they say. Ill report back here if i get a reply.

The tie rod stops the engine/gearbox moving forward on their rubber mountings.. Its quite small so is more there to allow the transmission brake to be pulled on hard. The tie bar may also stop the engine coming forward and hitting the radiator in the event of a hard nose end shunt.
 
@ArtherJob 1 No to the second part above. It was to prevent engine rev's from changing in an unwanted way when pulling up the hand brake or letting it off. Both hand brake and throttle are worked by link rods and movement of engine transmission would affect both. Later mounts were made stiffer and rod deleted.
