Hi All,
I've done a search on bad starting but most people have other symptoms!
TD4, 82k, all fiters/oil etc recent, no synergy mod, egr air hose off and blanked, new battery last week, old one died from frostbite!
Ignition on, wait a while, hear pumps whirring fine, turn to crank, spins over fast, no bite. Wait a minute to let battery recover and repeat. Did this twice more. Was about to give up, then remembered had a similar problem a while ago in summer. Switched ignition on and off quickly 3 times, on fourth time continued to crank, off we go fine, instant bite, no smoke no diesely smell. Fine rest of day, no power issues, missing etc. Injector, fuel pump or sensor going?
Cheers, Bill

Interesting, so did my old 300TDi Auto, 94 vintage! Just occaisionally, usually if not run for a few days, so put down to fuel drain back or vapour lock.
Freelander has been fine today, instant start at 7:15am and again at 6:00 pm.
Would like to get to the bottom of it though, am rather dependant on the old thing this time of year, bikes tucked up in the shed on sorn.............

yep i will go with glow plugs. . . . . .it will start with just three [one u/s] but if youve got another intermittant it wont start . . . .worth a good check me thinks :) :) :)

It wasn't that cold here on Sunday when the starting trouble happened. It has been fine since, but true it is warmer. It has always been a perfect starter even on the coldest mornings to date, so will check the gloplugs at the w/e. thanks for all the input so far, will keep thread updated.
