Afraid I've no way to test the VCU, as far as I'm aware it was fine when I took it off the car - only removed it to improve fuel economy.

If you/someone can suggest a way of testing it off the vehicle I'm more than happy to have a go.

It was off a 2000 TD4 btw.

If it's still attached to the prop you could use 2 long bars, put 1 in each UJ either side of the VCU and see if it turns.... that's what i'm going to do this weekend to test mine

Re-fit the prop. I had my hippo in mondo mode for a while, but when I put the prop back on I could feel the car gripping the road, it feels a lot safer to me, so four wheel drive every time!!

Thank you all for the input. Looks like everyone is in favour of reinstating the propshaft. I'm going to drive the car as is for the next few weeks to see how it goes. It's been in to the garage who reported the brake lines have been replaced with flexihoses and the car appears to be well cared for. Time will tell. As we are new to this 4 wheel drive scenario we don't have a benchmark although the car is lovely to drive as it is and feels well planted. I'll report back in a few weeks time :)
