Red gasket seal - how do I break it?

Trying to get the water pump off and it will not shift. It is only the gasket seal that is holding it on. How do I break the seal without damaging anything (apart from the old pump of course)?

it's the red stuff on both sides of the gasket.

Erm, hammer and a lump of wood? that stuff can stick pretty good!

i used an old wood chisel,make sure the flat part of the blade is against the part you dont want to damage.

Lump of wood and hammer worked a treat thanks.

Jeez that stuff sticks well. I wonder if I can swap some for the SWMBO's lipstick.
