how may engine blocks have you bored/honed?

I’m not a stranger to the boring bar or the honing bar guru, when I started out as an apprentice mechanic (not a production line operative) in house engine reconditioning was the norm, re boring, crank grinding, valve grinding and valve seat resurfacing was all part of the working day, I still have my white metal scrapers and engineers blue, but I think by now the blue is probably dried out.
Head skimming was also part of the norm, straight edge and feeler gauges to determine how much to skim.
King pin bush reaming, caster camber, king pin inclination all part of the working day. Back in my time we also rebuilt starters and dynamo's in house, re lined brake shoe's (still have my dolly's and former's)
Starter ring gears were a weak point back then, sweating a new ring gear onto a flywheel was also a regular task, replacing the starter bendix also (still have my bendix press)

You might have worked on the production line cock bod but I worked on the shop floor.

you mean youve seen someone do it then:rolleyes:,i too have done a full apprenticeship ,but hobos was no factory but a real machine shop /reconditioners ,wouldnt they have you :D

right to the OP

heres yer cheapest n best shot at this

find a used but complete bottom end ( dunt matter weather its diesel or petrol as the blocks are identical on the 10j 3 bearing engine

then all you have to do is strip the bugger and either hone it out yourself or get an engineer to do it

fit new rings big end bearings main bearings and all other things in the bugger ( its a great idea to fit a new main crank rear oil seal at this point aswell)

then just go about yer bizniss swapping the gubbinz from yer original engine to the new block taking care that evrything you touch is well within the manufacturers tolerances and in good serviceable order

Forget diesels Petrol now that a different matter!! The way petrol prices are going you'd be better off with petrol soon.

:kettlepot:

I've never worked for Hobsons nor have I ever applied for a job with them, but a friend of mine has worked for Hobsons, he has absolutely no mechanical training what so ever but still got a job with Hobsons, he worked on the production line preparing Land Rovers for Northen Ireland (no doubt you remember that production line)
He got the push cos he refused to be part of the after hours "team bonding" bollocks that you no doubt were very keen to be part off. Or in other words he couldn't kiss ass.

yes they did a lot of vehicles for northern ireland for both army and police ,hardly a production ,but complete refurbs and updating armour etc ,including full engine, gearbox , axle ,steering box rebuilds including all in house machining ,as did all their work at the time i worked there ,but also included much other work for lr and mod plus ordinary customers if you wanted to know anything about lrs or machining engines ,auto boxes etc that was as good as place as any certainly you could learn more than a ****ty little car shop ,at one time any recon borgwarner would have come from there ,it did get bull****ty thats why i left

A ****ty little car shop had to deal with whatever came along, not just the same as a Land Rover "specialist" did on the production line yesterday, and the day before, and will be doing next day.
If you lived in my world guru you'd remember spark plug numbers, air and oil filter numbers etc, but you'd not know the number for a silly ####ing washer or some daft nut or split pin simply because you worked on so many different makes and types of vehicle, very unlike a production line eh!

i know i do something similar at the moment ,plus other stuff ,just ive done lr stuff too but not as unskilled labour ,your the one with the issue get over it
