Rebuilt v. Reburb v. Remanuf v. Overhaul?

I am buying a 300tdi w/ r380 with about 160k miles so I want to get it put in proper order before I start driving the engine. So my question is what does each of these really mean in terms of the level of work to be performed on the engine and what is generally the cost of each? What would you guys recommend for the engine and gearbox???

Remanufactured would be the highest, all items fully cleaned, renewed if need be and tested to spec

refurb and rebuilt more or less the same, faulty parts replaced, cleaned and made sure its running

depends where you go ,but normally gear box would need new bearings x 7 and baulkrings at least,engine rebore new pistons ,new head valves ,crank bearings timing kit,cam etc, gear box £400 ish engine £1500 ish, but engine could be made right by fitting new crank bearings ,timing kit ,water pump ,head gasket ,valves new with seats cut gearbox should be done,ive nver stripped many that i would put back together without ,have done plenty of tdi engines bores usually very good with crank bearings showing signs of wear and valves ,ive rebored many not for been worn but because thats what recon is,water pumps allways need replacing

Reman should be as good as new not near enough (like a recon) but new.
But you will pay for the quality.
160k isnt worn out by quite some way

Hi, A Re-Manufactured engine is rebuilt using quality parts, Re-bored, honed, Crankshaft reground or polished,new bearings for crankshaft,New Valves,Guides, Seats Cut, New cam bearings fitted to cylinder Block, New cam and brass slides/Rollers, top of cylinder block and cylinder head skimmed flat, All items crack tested, completely cleaned and assembled using good quality gaskets/Seals and new head Bolts. oh Yes and a rebuilt oil pump front cover or new front cover as needed !, a rebuilt engine is more of a repair rather than Re-manufacturing which will come with a 12 month warranty.
