Disco 2 Rear wiper

Started the car this morning, it was quite frosty and there was a clatter from the rear of the car. I got out to investigate and found out that the wiper arm had shattered next to the spindle and was hanging by the washer tubing. The actual blade was stuck to the window with ice!

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

What wiper blades frozen to the screen, every winter not a great problem is it? as for the wiper motor being switch on with the blades being frozen to the screen most owners have the sense not to.

On the D2 the rear wiper works automatically when the front is switchet on and reverse is selected and that's not optional, the cure is to cut the reverse input for that particular function

How often do you actually use the rear wiper?
I use my side mirrors rather than my rear view mirror (too much experience driving vans, towing trailers, and filling the car to the roof with kit) so in all honesty if that happened I would turn on the heated rear window, wait for the wiper blade to drop off, throw it in the bin, and carry on .

Plastic, as it gets older can become brittle and sub-zero temperatures can then cause that brittle plastic to just fall to bits.
I do dislike the wiper blades sticking to a frosted up windscreen. These days I use a squirt of de-icer spray on the wiper blades and just check that they're free at the same time as de-icing all of the windows, not just a "letter box" on the front windscreen.

I think that most of us who drive modern vehicles know if it's equipped with a rear wiper it can function as you state.
Therefore one would not have the front wipers switched on and at the same time select reverse if they suspected that there was a possibility of the rear wiper being frozen to the glass, in some way is what same for the windscreen wipers... Simples
