The rear wiper on the wifes freelander recently stopped working, did the obvious and checked the fuse and relay, all good, so had a look at the motor, luckily i didnt leave it too long after she reported it as the motor casing was red hot!
Whipped it off, 3 nuts, opened it up, its only a handfull of tx screws and peered in, it all looked fine so i tried to operate it plugged in to the car but not connected to the wiper arm and it didnt function and heated up quickly.
Removed the cover again, then removed the motor casing complete with stator, be carefull and hold back the carbon brushes as they are small and easilly damaged, i then cleaned everything up with brake cleaner, gave the commutator a rub with emmery paper, greased all points of contact with silicone grease and popped it all back together carefully fitting the shaft into motor housing. once plugged back into the car it functioned perfectly, and never heated up.
Its well worth a try as a replacement is £120, and it only took half an hour of messing about, on a 1-10 scale of difficulty is about a 2. minimal tools required.
