Freelander 1 Rear stop light not working

My nearside brake light will not come on and I've tested the bulb and it is fine. I fitted a new brake switch 18 months ago but if that had failed I assume all 3 brake lights would not work.

Any ideas chums ?

Not to sure as with brake light switch being faulty as depends on supplier. best have a multimeter check if there any volts showing also try testing the tow socket if thats showing fault. bulbs can be faulty even when they read as the filaments can overheat an crack inside being old but cold still read.

Bad earth that side, you might need to squeeze holder, have you checked power to that side, have you towing electrics on scotchlocks, rather than plug in?

Hi - this reply depends on model, I have the 2005 Td4 but the brake light wiring is probably the same on others.
1/ Have you got the right bulb - should be twin filament with offset pins.
2/ Have a close look at the holder and check the bulb pin nearest the terminals goes into the deepest slot. Look for corrosion.
3/ On mine, the bulb holder has an electrical plug on the back - check that is fully home by pushing hard.
4/ See if the sidelight that side works, then get someone to press the brake pedal. If the sidelight goes out, it's
an earth problem, follow the wiring to an earth post under the bumper somewhere.
5/ Failing all that, if you have home-made towbar wiring, check for a broken or corroded connection.
6/ Get a multimeter and someone who knows how to use it. Then follow the wiring back across the car to where it
joins the RH wiring.

Sorry should have said - it's a 55 plate 1.8.
I tested the bulb with a 12v battery and it lit up ok. Forgive my autoelectric ignorance but why test the tow socket/electrics.

Hey - that was quick - hope it's going to be helpful. The wiring loom comes over the RH rear wheelarch (behind the panelling of course), then splits to the 3 rear lights. The cable to the LH lamp runs under the plastic trim (if I remember right) which holds the carpet down in the rear doorway. Undo 6 torx screws (2 short, 2 long, 2 short I think) and heave, there are 2 spring clips as well. If you're going to do a DIY towbar then you are likely to cut into that cable, in order to join up the towbar socket. A bad joint here could kill the LH tail-light and keep the other two working. For wiring colours try a Haynes manual; I'll check mine and post you the colours for 1.8 petrol 2005 facelifted model if I get that right. If you haven't got a towbar (or evidence of one having been removed) then forget the above and just check out the bulbholder. Cheers.

Here's the wiring - too easy, all Freelander 1 models the same. Brake light Green/purple; Side light LH Red/black; RH Red/orange;
Reverse Green/brown; Fog lights Red/yellow; Indicators LH Green/red; RH Green/white; Earth = Black.

Fixed. Thanks for your help everyone, the connector wiring was faulty, all sorted now.
