Arghhhh disco’s!!!

matter a glorious week last week with fitting new parts I took dogs out this morning to an almighty knock on the rear drivers side.

got back home, took the wheel off to find the top mount for rear shock absorber (only fitted last week) has rotted off the chassis!!

chassis doesn’t look too bad but might be time to replace 1/4 or 1/3.

If I do that, would it be far enough back to have new shock mounts?
 
That's massively overpriced !
I fitted a 1/3 chassis (the 1400mm section) 2 years ago & it was just under £600.
Others seem to have found similar during the last year.
Beware that the body mount positions can need some "optimisation" to make them fit on some suppliers parts.
If your shocker mounts were that bad, I'm sure you need at least the 1400mm section - but I'd be checking much further forward too - as you might have nothing solid to weld to or need bits of the front welding up too.
Replacing the 1400mm section was no big deal as long as you have a competent welder available. There's slightly more work involved than the 900mm section, but you're not going to waste your time chasing all the extra rot you obviously have.
Be prepared to need to weld up the fuel tank retainer flange too. My chassis was nowhere near as bad as yours and the fuel tank reatiner needed patches welding in.

The 1/3 replacements I can see are about £650 but the one I linked is a 1/2 replacement

ive ordered a replacement shock mount bracket that should arrive tomorrow.

nothing to lose in trying to patch and repair the existing one
 
No, its not a half chassis !
1400mm is the standard section that replaces most at the rear, but leaves the rear trialing arm mountings on the car so there won't be any major axle alignment issues.
For some reason, many people refer to the 1400mm section as a "half chassis" despite it being nowhere near half.
You're optimistic about finding some steel to weld a replacement damper mount to - lol.
At least that part will be cheap & relatively easy access.
 
Still some tidying up to do but the actual chassis is surprising solid, need to weld on a sheet to patch and then weld on the new mount.
 
When I saw the picture this morning I was convinced the chassis would be totally foobarred but that chassis looks to be in fine fettle. You would not have said that shocker mount came off a chassis that good.

Yes I had the same concern and was building a case with the Mrs for a new 1/2 chassis lol.

So going to pick up a piece of sheet from a mate later and mount coming tomorrow on the post.

So will keep you updated

Either / or but cutting it the exact size and infill welding will be a neater job and can be disguised as not having been repaired putting future potential buyers at ease. Just make a cardboard template first then cut the piece to suit.
 
Tbh this bit I have circled doesnt look overly clever, I would investigate that, and whatever is the other side of it before welding up.

part of that chassis rail looks good, and imo part looks a bit suspect. Looks pitted and scabbed to me just before it curves down to the low part that traps mud and shi-te.
I would examine that very closely and IF it’s okay I would consider a rust converter on the inside like fertan etc, and if not or thin I would parch that bit while you are there to

I'm amazed the chassis is that good given the state of that shock mount! Have you given it a proper poke up the side of fuel tank? That's where mine went bad.

thay advanced apprenticeship 10 week module in welding came good in the end lol!

not out of the woods yet, got a the mount to weld on next, will probably be at the weekend as not got any free time u til Saturday morning.
