Hi guys, well I changed the UJs on my propshaft (well one end) to drive down the road and hear a clunk then to have no movement at all, when I looked under Landy rear propshaft on the floor, all circlips etc put in correctly, changed UJs due to vibration, and yes one side was seized, changed oil in diff too, free play when wheels rotated, what has caused this to happen? All help and advise much appreciated. Perry

No expert, but it depends what fell on the floor.....?

Is it flange as well as prop, in which case didn't do the nuts up.....;)

If its the prop without flange with no uj at all left in it, then maybe the circlips hadn't seated properly?

With new, proper size uj and 4 circlips seated round it I don't see how it would come apart, kind of designed that way..?

If its the internal casting of the uj gone and the cups are all in place, then did you pinch a roller and its destroyed the casting on first use....?

If what you've got left is undamaged, then just do the job again and double check everything? And be thankful it wasn't the front uj/prop digging in.....

Others with more skills will be along I guess/hope..... Cheers, A

Thanks. The flanges are still bolted to Landy I only replaced one end with a new UJ which is why I'm stumped. Or would the force cause the other end to drop out? Circlips were a pain as a pattern part and slightly thicker than the original but seemed to be well seated

did you set the phasing of the u/js ?, ie did were the two u/js fitted in the same position, relative to each other, on either ends of the shaft? If not set this couls break them. Also, one joint would have gone first, then dropped the shaft and thus broke the other joint.

Sorry to say it, but thinking pattern parts (did they carry the blue badge of terror) lead to user error

Really shouldn't have fallen apart if properly seated - at least you weren't at speed - kinda scary when the prop comes through the floor:eek:

Have you got a pic? Which bits fallen apart?
If the cups have come out and the joints fell apart then the circlips can't have been in correctly.
If one of the yokes have broken then either it was damaged when the old uj seized or somethings damaged it pressing the old uj out or the new one in.

When fitting the circlips I run a screwdriver round the groove. Fit the clip then bang the two ears of the clip outwards with hammer and pin punch to make sure it's seated. It's surprising how many times you think it's seated but then it seats properly when you give it a whack.

why use pattern parts? theres only a couple of quid difference between a crappy one in a blue bag and a good GKN part ( I bought 2 last week - price for GKM £11 each, price for *******t £8, no brainer).

but as has been said, need pics to diagnose

Well I was going to get originals from a local land rover garage and was quoted £40 each of pattern parts for £6. Xmas and all I went for the cheaper. Bigger fool me. Lol

genuine LR will be £40 but go for OEM, ie GKN and they are the same thing but not in a LR box for £11
I get mine of ebay and keep a spare in stock.

Yes I believe these are the ones I've just ordered, yes blue box one were the originals. Cheers guys once again you knowledge and advise has been extremely helpful

Forty quid! OW!

As others have said, good quality parts and don;t bother getting a green oval on the box.

Universal joints are Precision 344s or 369s depending on the age of the vehicle and the amusing bit is that those numbers go all the way back to the Series I. :) The 344 is the narrower of the two. the 369 is used in just about everything rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet for just about forever...makes things much easier to live with my side of the pond.
