Spent the day practising my vertical welding on thin metal (1.2-1.4). Final go at butt welding mismatched thicknesses of plate was not too bad.
I've now built a rig so I can practise upside down welding, though I'm waiting for some PPE before I give that a go.
New box section and mounts now arrived, so I will be able to replace the sill completely after my welding attempts.

Don't forget, if welding in box section, the A, B & C pillars will need supporting.

I guessed they would. I'll make up some "pit props" to support them.
Will the doors need to come off?
I notice from the various threads covering sill replacements that they normally have the doors (and everything else it seems) removed.
I'll whip the wing off to get access to the A pillar, but would need some help doing the doors - never done them before and I guess they are frigging 'eavy!I would like to avoid wholesale interior removal if I can, just cos I'm lazy

The more weight on the pillars, the greater likelyhood that they will sag, so yes to doors. easy to do. Mark where they go first, to help with realignment.
If you ae doing the complete box section, then the carpets will need removing, if not already.
dont forget the fire extinguisher

First "proper" welding done, patching a hole in the floor near the passenger seat belt mount where Land Rover seemed to deliberately put a captive nut which rusted out

True, but ground down the welds look OK. Bit of seam sealer and a coat of paint and they're under a carpet anyway.nothing a good grinding disk and more welding practice wont cure

That welding looks ok to me, if you can tw@ it wiv a big hamma and it stay put then ittl be alright
