Did this again last week after 4yrs, disconnected battery - then able to open door but windows calibration beeping. Managed to remove door cover and all looked well but windows wouldn't drop. Did old trick of driving about a low and behold windows would drop and all working and rear windows re-set.

Now 1 week on the same problem - door not opening, alarm beeping indicating something not shut correctly.

Any ideas what's the cause - faulty sensor, door mech or even window regulator?

Well ,I had the same problem , same symptoms and nearly same time span too....
Problem re occured about two months ago and nothing would get it going again .
The only difference was that the door latch mechanism was working after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery ,but nothing else. I managed to gently squeeze the glass passed the upper plastic seal and then remove the trim and seal. I checked the power to the motor and when the dash switch was pressed there was a momentery 12v pulse but not continuous . I removed the side panel and checked the relay and base and all wiring found nothing apparently wrong.
The cable system was intact so I concluded that the motor was U/S.
I bought this this week FREELANDER TAILGATE WINDOW REGULATOR & MOTOR FREE DEL. on eBay (end time 03-Jul-11 11:52:40 BST) and fitted it today.
Problem solved , all functions working again.
I'll strip the old one and see if there is anything apparant but if your symptoms are similar to mine then I'd replace the whole system.
It's a very simple job .

Thanks Dan.

I unplugged battery over weekend and that freed the door again. Went to prise out the rear windows as not dropping and all of a sudden it dropped. Working fine again!

Can't help thinking got a dodgy connection somewhere or window position sensor or rear CCU acting up.

I've got a motor from a side door but not sure they are the same.

Nothing works to the rear - wiper etc when it acting up.

I'd look at the wiring harness from the car to the door if nothing is working including the wiper etc

Like you I have a couple of spare motors left over from front regulator replacement. I just checked and they are two pin , straight + - supply , whereas the rear door has 6 pins . The rear motor assembly clearly has position sensors in it which are utilised by the CCU to determine if the rear wiper & demister can be activated , ie if the window is in the up position.
here's a thread that may help ,
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/rear-window-bob-marlyied-jammed-138930.html

I didn't do it although Ming tells it well it may be worth a try although I think you'd be better off removing the assembly to do it as it's kinda sharp and tight in there.
I'd agree with Ming in that the problem seems to stem from the motor being little used and seizing in the closed position , when you try to open it using the dash switch it trips the ccu into thinking the window is down , or at least off the closed position , and therefore it , the CCU ,shuts off power to the wiper & HRW .
Due to the fact the motor will not operate down and then back up the sensor inside the motor for this function can't be reset to the CCU , hence door mechanism works but wiper/HRW doesn't.
By all means do what I did , and was suggested , and thoroughly check the wiring harness and relay / base .
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
