Rear Diff. What have I got and what should I do?

Having taken the full rear axle out yesterday I am now entering another bit of new territory for me in my quest for completion.

I am assuming that this is a Salisbury as it matches other pictures I've seen. The outside is becoming nice and clean and shiny: but shiny doesn't make it work any better. There was no obvious issues before I took it apart so should I open her up ? Are there any bearings/gaskets to replace?

As usual all help very willingly accepted!!!

you could pop the rear case off but short of changing the gasket theres nothing much you can do. You need a special tool to remove the diff from memory

if it's not leaking or showing any bearing wear i'd just paint it

never seen a wood saw used in a series overhaul lol

Change the oil, obviously, but look for bits in it. If there's a lot of lumps of metal it might bear further investigation. I've never worked on one of these but it does look like you can change the pinion oil seal without stripping the diff. Might be worth doing if it's weeping a bit 'cos they're a bugger to do on a rover diff in situ.

Swapped mine in situ easily enough

Propshaft off, flange off, old seal out, new seal in, simple, no leaks

Once I'd got the propshaft off, it was the "old seal out" bit that took ages - lying in a puddle under the landy with a screwdriver and a hammer trying to remove the old style leather seal....

Ah I got you now. Mine was rubber, just screwed a self tapper into it and pulled it out with a claw hammer
