While 100% right on the RRC, I'm not claiming too much credit on the P38, after all a stopped clock is right twice a day :D:D

After sleeping on it and reading/staring at the P38 diagram a few more times I've gotten my head around the P38 arrangement.

I couldn't see where the rear output shaft was splining into, but I have it now (In my defence it's not clear from the diagram:eek:, but it's spelled out clear enough in the text).

The planet gear carrier (rear ouput) and sun gear (front output) rotate in opposite directions to give differential movement the same as the pinion gears in a normal diff. The VC simply resists this opposite twist, forcing the whole outer gear to rotate with the sun and planet gears locked together.

So while completely different to the RRC, operationally it is identical.

Simple after you've scratched a bald patch onto your head and gone bleary eyed from staring at flippin RAVE

It also helps if your not looking at it through the bottom of a JD glass i find. Pretty simple when all the haze goes away. If i ever mention a transfer box again feel free to tell me to shut up.:D:D:D

Blimey Tony, I never thought you would back down on that one:D Took me a long time to get clear details of the operation of the centre diff. When I have one dismantled I will post photo's if I can show the workings clearly. Don't hold your breath, it will be a while yet, just finished digging the service pit to drop the box and fit my spare:D

Had to really Keith, the drawings in RAVE are not too clear. Workshop manuals are not what they used to be by a long chalk. But will wait for your clear photos before i whip myself with a rusty chain. But looking at things in a rather more sober fashion so to speak, what you and the other lads say makes perfect sense. So i will get a chain to hand ready for the day of judgement.:):):)

Only know so much beacause of my transmission problems, RAVE has a lot of errors and vague information, as you say W/S manuals are not what they used to be. Takes a big man to admit an error:D:D:D
