Hi,

Been getting a banging noise from the rear of the car between gear changes. My mechanic changed one of the mounts which was done and this got rid of the banging. A week later and I am getting a similar banging from the rear between gear changes and also putting my foot on/off the accelerator. Also getting a creaking noise after I stop the car.
The mechanic is replacing the other mounts this week to see if this is the cause. The thing is tonight I jacked both rear wheels up and they turned smoothly with the opposite wheel turning the opposite direction. When I do this the drive shaft down to the VCU does not turn. Is this the way it should be?
Then when I only jack up one rear wheel and try to turn it, it turns very slightly before I get a similar bang and creak which I have been hearing. Also when I do this, the drive shaft turns a slight bit also (on both sides of the vcu).
Could anyone confirm if the above sounds correct or is there anything wrong which what happened? And if the bang/creak isnt normal, what do you think might be causing it?

Thanks

The thing is tonight I jacked both rear wheels up and they turned smoothly with the opposite wheel turning the opposite direction. When I do this the drive shaft down to the VCU does not turn. Is this the way it should be? Yes. Lift both rear wheels and turn 1. Other will turn different direction due to how the rear diff works. Props will be stationary.
Then when I only jack up one rear wheel and try to turn it, it turns very slightly before I get a similar bang and creak which I have been hearing. Also when I do this, the drive shaft turns a slight bit also (on both sides of the vcu). Your doing the "one wheel up test" here as per my signature below. Constant applied pressure to the wheel will allow the wheel to turn, only if the vcu (between the 2 props) is not seized solid (and both props and vcu are fitted with a working ird - or it'll spin round anyway). You need to do this again and listern out for the location of the bang and go from there. From your description it sounds like this is the way forward as it created the noise your after.
Could anyone confirm if the above sounds correct or is there anything wrong which what happened? And if the bang/creak isnt normal, what do you think might be causing it?

Thanks

bang/ knock caused by faulty rear diff mounts (is that what you're having gradually replaced?) or cracked sub frame I suspect. If so, both fairly cheap fixes.

does it do it specifically when going into reverse from stationary? if so, a replaced central rear diff mount fixed mine when it was doing the same.

All of the rear diff mounts have been replaced now, took her out a spin and getting the odd creak but i think thats just normal. I'm sure the knocking will return in some form or another.
It wasnt from reverse to stationary, it was more the application of power. Just letting on or taking off power at low speeds.
