Disco 2 rear diff play

I removed the prop shaft to replace the diff oil seal today. After disconnecting the donut I have noticed there is a lot of play. The yolk will turn about 12mm. Upon draining the oil a lot of sludge came out with metal filings and a roll pin. Is the diff shagged? I do get a thump going on and off the power.
I also changed the automatic gear box oil today and when changing from drive to reverse with my foot on the brake there is a thump.

id be pulling it out to have a look, the diff carrier bearing adjusters are located by roll pins

Nah its fine, they come with 2 spare rollers in, have you found the other one yet?

The pictures are bad but you just about get the idea, the pin was loose and could slide out and rub on the crown wheel.
The new diff I fitted was nowhere near as bad but you could see it starting to wear the same. How do you stop it doing this is ?

drive more forgivengly or buy a 4 pin carrier
