after hearing a knock when first touching the brakes, first moving v slowly and with clutch in (traffic tailback), then noticing it when moving faster, i have a feeling it might need new rear diff mounts fitting.

Did some quick looking about and found a Britpart 3piece kit for £30, much less than the oem parts, so my question is will these britpats be any good? Anyone used them?

Yer need to be careful when ordering britpart. Some on ere call them sh*tpart. They sell a range of different types of part, with varying results. Some are ok, some are crap and others are far worse. They sell:
genuine = what LR fit
oem original equipment manufacturer = same make as LR part
pattern = equivalent part which may or may not be the same quality as the originals from LR = risky

You'll probably find it's only the front mount which has failed. You can wobble the diff and check for movement first.

Pay the £ 30 and you 'll be replacing them in three months with something better, so you may as well put something better on now, cheaper in the long run!!
 
thank you...exactly what i needed to hear.

i have just been under the car and tried moving the diff and found if i pushed on the back of the diff there was approx 1mm of movement, and when i pushed the front of the diff, and around the propshaft joint, it had around 5mm of movement. Not easy doing it one handed but there aint a lot of room under there!

Is this indicative of the mount needing replacing?

Polybushes are the way to go. There is a place that advertises on Ebay based in Rhyl, North Wales that sells them.
Had mine on for over 3 years now (Front bush) without any problems. It's generally the one that that goes. You can buy just the front or the complete set.
Fit and forget !!
 
Do you get vibrations from the poly bush type? The originals have a rubber like insert which dampens the rear diff movement.

Hi Hippo....None whatsoever, furthermore I am sure they improve the life of the VCU mounts/bearing assemblies due to reduced vibration and radial movement. Polybushes are resistant to oil/grease and weather deteriation. The original brackets are utilised-the original rubber/steel bushes have to be removed.

I was looking at a polybush kit to do all my bushes, but I need to get a press 1st so that I can actually change them.
Hi LM....Changed all of my rear suspension bushes earlier this year to Standard "Black grade" Polybushes and it made a vast improvement to ride & handling-the old LR bushes were tired but not damaged. Removal of the steel/rubber bushes was pretty easy (Greenpeace Members look away !!) , set the rubber alight with a blowlamp after a while the steel inner and surrounding rubber will fall out. When cooled, carefully make a cut with a hacksaw along the length of the steel sleeve and it will pop out. Polish the bore with a abraisive flap wheel and you're ready to fit the polybushes. Took about a couple of hours to remove all of the bushes plus around an hour to clean the bores.
*TIP* Always buy two new long bolts and nuts (Bolts ANR5337, Nuts RYH100590) as the originals are likely to be rusted solid in the hub. Soaking for 24hrs with Plus Gas (NOT WD40) helped but mine were a bastid to get out -the hardest part of the whole job !!!!
 
All poly diff bushes on my TD4 - no vibration at all. BUT when I fitted Poly to the lower gearbox steady - that is a different story ! Car vibrates against brake in 'Drive' and shudders itself to a stop (it is an auto) and then continues to shudder until slipped into 'N'. So - next oil change I put it back to a new standard rubber one ! Just a caution............
 
Just dug out my old set of diff mounts...Big vice, big hammer and a big socket, five minutes of intent thumping and they're all out! Poly bushes next time.

The rear mounts have 2 methods of allowing the diff to move, as there's rubber bits in each mount. Changing 1 to poly means yer relying on only 1 for movement per mount. The front mount only has 1 rubber bush so putting a poly in it means there's no bounce. It's surprising how often the rear diff moves about on the bushes.
