I have been running 'Mondo mode' for a while now as a slight noise started at the rear of the vehicle. My rear diff has gradually become slightly noisey. Its an early type and has covered 110K.Can anybody see any problems if I was to remove the rear diff and rear driveshafts to allow an overhaul at my leisure??I understand that it kind of defeats the object of a 4x4, but I only use the car for commuting on main roads and it was cheap £550.Any thoughts??The rear wheels should still stay on the car with the driveshaft nut and shafts removed?? ThanksSteve

i had a look into this fur the 2wd 220Turbo hippoo - and I reckon it wud be fine. But having sed that - I aint tried it;)

let us know how it goes.

I was also thinkin - yu cud fit an X-trail rear diff which has the auto (vcu) 2/4wd coupling on the front of it - and remove the Hippoo VCU completely. It would mean you would have to get the halfshafts modded - but would be a significant improvement:D and wud enable yu to have selective 2wd/4wd on demand;)

I'll have a play tomorrow. The diff needs a lot of work (most likely complete replacement) as it is very noisey now and has been filled with grease by previous owner.

I'll keep you informed of progress.

Steve

Interesting mod G13SJC

Where abouts on the driveshaft were you going to split it?

The inner CV joint to Hub is partly responsible for keeping bearing in check, you might have to split at the Cv end, leaving part of the CV bolted to the hub. Which means an open rubber boot ...............sure to fail an MOT.

I would go with the upgrade to a Nissan part if its not big money

he should have fed an old pair of tights into it! makes them quieter and they don't get runny when they heat up

I'm interested in the Nissan option, but not technically skilled enough to implement.

I was planning to remove the whole driveshaft on both sides - do you think this is a viable option?? (looking at your last post re keeping the bearing in check)

I am not sure it is that difficult to change the diff - sure enuf new mounts need to be fabricated and the halfshafts need to be sorted - but that aint major stuff. The electrics would be more complicated, but not too difficult to achieve.

welcome ozzy
yup - electric switching of 2/4wd :D
the nissan controls this facility by means of a current controller supplying to the rear (VCU) mechanism. If this could be easily duplicated - a switch on the dash could be sorted to allow fur switching of 2/4wd. The nissan uses a special ECU which takes inputs from speed, acceleration, braking, speed and turning sensors to enable an "auto" facility - so this wuld need to be replicated in a very simple manner.

I have covered this in huge detail elsewhere - possibly in the fred here.

nope - it aint that easy - a switch controls Volts - not Amps (current), but something is required that can supply a variable current - up to 10Amps! see here

I know yu 3 have chatted about this before:D

Just had a thought on the way home - I could undo the CV gaiter clip (large one), seperate the joint nearest the wheels and leave the shaft in place. If the gaiter is completely removed and the grease cleaned, then hopefully should pass an MOT.

When (and if) I replace the rear drive shafts, I could use a couple of large jubilee clips to secure the CV boot to the cup/shaft again.

This would hopefully keep the wheel bearing happy.

I'm gonna sleep on it and investigate tomorrow.

would it not be possible to fit some kind of trace heating arrangement to the vcu. then you could flick a switch, turn it on, which would warm up the silicon gel inside, making it solidify, hey presto, locked diff !
