Evening all,

After two years of working to get my landie back on the road,a few hours at the weekend a couple through the week, it finally passed the MOT last week a couple of advisorys but nothing major excellent,

Been driving to and from work for the last three days with a great big smille on my face ( this is my first landrover).

Anyhow got home last night and i could smell burning the back wheels were red hot,i only live 2 miles from work,so after work tonight i jacked her up took the hubs of to investigate but could see nothing obvious only the shoe that is connected by the bottom only, the top where it sits on the piston was very loose this was the same on both sides then the piston on the passengers side just pushed it's self out .

There is obviously something wrong but what i am not sure would be grateful of any advice:)

Cheers Andy

the shoes should be held together with some springs so they shouldn't be loose... do you have the springs (two, one at the top, one at the bottom...)

I've had this, if the springs are all in place check the free play at the master cylinder - it might not be releasing fully.

hi
over adjusted brakes will bind.
weak brake springs will cause binding
sticking wheel cylinders will likewise
and partially blocked flexible hoses can cause awful problems.
have fun.......................................................................

Sorry not been able to log on last couple of days

Slave cylinders had gone, to say the pistons was rusty would be an understatement it had been stood for 5years should have known bette,r but it did pass an MOT recently. I think the cylinders were 'pushing' the shoes against the drum just enough to cause some friction, and me to struggle up hills, hence getting very warm very quickly.

As soon as i took the drums of, which was easy, the pistons popped out.

Replaced with new ones and new springs all good there just can't get the bloody thing to bleed properly i have to pump the pedal to get any pressure behind them, any thoughts?

I am using an eezibleed,is there a certain sequence or am i missing something?

Appreciate all the reply's thanks and i am loving every minute of it.

Andy

Hi Andy,

I've had virtually the same problem. Replaced both rear brake systems, bleed brakes according to sequence but still have a spongy feel on the first press of the brake pedal. Second press of the pedal gives great breaking force.
I'll let you know as soon as find anything. Hope you will return the favour.

Hi rosieroe

we think it might be the master cylinder, just ordered a new seal kit for it ( cheapest option first:D) will let you know how it goes.
