Hi all,

I recently swapped my rear axle as the diff in my old one was making some weird noises!

Had the new axle on about 2 weeks and I've noticed, what looks like black oil on both my rear wheels. It looks as though it has leaked out at high speed due to the pattern of it.

Any ideas what it could be? Are there oil seals in the hubs?

I'm no expert so any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers, J.

It's on the outside of the wheel.

It comes from the inside of the rim and right out onto the tyres.

This morning I've noticed it's clear now which means I'm leaking the new oil I used to top up the diff when I put the axle on!

so it is probably the halfshaft inner oil seal inside the axle, when you pull the halfshafts out you will see a raised smooth area about 6-8 inches in from the drive flange or outer shaft end, this sits in an oil seal that is supposed to keep the axle oil away from the bearing grease and the hub, it might be shagged.

cheap enough to buy and i have no idea how easy to replace as i bought some but never got round to fitting mine, i just changed the inner hub grease seal at the back of the hub for a steel sprung one and allowed the oil to traverse into the hub, it keeps my bearings well lubed and i change the oil quite often as i am always mucking about in deep water and mud.
