New plug leads, king lead, dizzy cap and rotor, ignition amplifiers can be temperamental. Why mess up something that you can essentially fix with a screwdriver, pliers or a hammer for something you need a multimeter and stress balls for ...

Get the best you can afford there is some real junk out there.
 
Yes, I've binned all that modern crap, including the power spark points thing and gone back to a proper lucas distributor (not a crappy non-functioning copy). One day I may go for a mega-jolt or other "proper" computer ignition (better economy etc) but without going the whole hog I can't see the point in ignition amplifiers etc

What are the symptoms. Mine is parked in the ****ing wind and rain and still starts up and runs fine, even when I forget and open the bonnet and tip water all over the coil...

Are you sure its not the cold / getting your choke working right?

Thanks for the thoughts from you both. It turns over fine but no go. I am gonna change the points and see if that sorts it. Brand new Lucas leads already on. Sparks are good! If that does'nt work Ill change the coil as well maybe?
 
Also Dominic, what do you mean about the choke, this is new to me.

i can only assume your too young to have experience with manual choke vehicles

if so

theres a knob near the ignition switch you need to pull out to start the bugger cold this knob shuts a butterfly valve at the top of the carbourettor thus restricting the air intake and forcing a little more fuel into the cylinders

the comment of maybee its not operating the choke properly means maybee the cable that connects this butterfly to the knob you pull has either snapped or slipped and is not moving the butterfly valve flap

this valve can easily be seen by removing the air intake pipe (the big fat one ) off the top of the carbourettor and looking down into the carb

Johnny's right, though depending on the type of carb the knob may be in the centre of the dash. they're usually marked with a symbol that looks a bit like |\|. they sometimes get disconnected as you can often get away without them on a badly set up carburettor in the summer.

The purpose of the choke is to put more fuel in when the engine and inlet manifold are cold. What happens is the petrol that gets mixed in with the air in the carburettor condenses on the walls of the manifold and pistons so there's not enough mixed in with the air to keep the engine going, the choke restricts the airflow upstream of the carburettor and causes the mixture to have extra fuel.

The choke is a butterfly valve at the top of the carburettor and is usually operated by a cable, as opposed to the throttle which is at the bottom and usually operated by a set of rods and levers.

If the cable is missing or broken you could try operating the choke by hand but watch out for backfires!
 
All of the above. Great advice. I am a bit too young (lol). It is the choke!! Genius. Basically the choke was doing too much, so if I only pull it out a little it now starts fine. But as i understand it the choke restricts air flow and increases fuel input? If my choke is too ummmm aggressive (can 't think of a better word) could it still be putting more fule into the carb even when technically off? Would this explain very quick heating up of the engine and low fuel economy (even for a 2.25)?

Yes. It's likely that the carb needs cleaning/tuning so that the fuel mixture is correct. It's also worth checking the whole air intake system for blockages .. they can richen the mixture very easily!
 
Good grief man! What you need to do is go and eat pancakes at your mates house while he sorts out your ignition troubles. While we're on the subject of fuel consumption please remember that your lovely engine was built in the fifties when the government didn't charge any where near as much duty and women only came in white like, fridges.
