Hi all, I am new to Land Rover ownership and have a 1999 TD5 Defender 110 3 door Comercial station wagon which I have purchased to tow my families caravan when required and to help me when out logging. So far it has been fine it has 94K on the clock and some history it was previously a Defra vehicle and my local garage says its mechanically sound and appears well looked after in its previous ownership. However I have a few questions:
1. During the colder last couple of weeks a lot of smoke from exhaust when on initial tick over. Once warm there is no smoke evident??? Is this the norm???

2. It is using a bit of water the expansion level keeps falling - I have filled with anti freeze and distilled water twice now in the last month about 3/4 litre on each occasion. I can see no evidence of a water leek and I have rid the system of any air by undoing the top release valve on the hose and squeezing any air out.....

I am hoping all of this is the querks of ownership although I cant help but feel my wallet may be in for a pounding and we are hoping to use it for holidaying this year

1) your TD5 has 5 cylinders and only 4 glow plugs. A quick stutter and white smoke is normal. It's unburnt fuel.:)

2) Distilled water? Tap water is cheaper.;) How hard are your coolant pipes getting after driving? Is the heater blowing out hot air ok? You don't need to squeeze the top hose with the bleed screw loosened. just watch for when the bubbles stop and then wait a bit longer before re-tightening. It will self bleed. Squeezing it can cause it to suck in air. It shouldn't be losing any coolant. Keep your eyes open for tell tale white crystal streaks which are the sign of leaks. keep a close eye on the expansion cap. If it is losing coolant from there then it is a sign of overpressurising and possibly head gasket. Try dipping a peice of white tissue in the top of the expansion tank. Is there any oil on it or is it clean?

Wow head gasket  ..... heater has struggled to blow hot air out although when the water level is right it is better.... the water in the exspansion tank seems clear no obvious oil etc.... cant say that I have noticed whether or not the hoses are hard or not but dont seem to be anything over the ordinary. Expansion cap looks fine

..... oh and it has recently been plugged into a diagnostic machine that said everything was ok save it needed a new air flow meter.... I fitted a second hand one and any lumpiness this had seemed to be a tad better

It might be worth checking your water pump too. Your thermostat works on both temp and pressure created by the water pump at 1500rpm upwards. It may be weak or leaking. It is located behind the power steering pump near the oil cooler.
