hi , just joined today ,
hoping someone can help , ive not long bought a 2.5 diesel p38
ive noticed when driving it i get a rattle or a knocking noise when you accelerate above 2500 rpm , the rattle is only there when under load , doesnt do it if you are parked up and revving engine
any ideas ?

Hi Rodell, does the sound seem to come from under the passenger floor/footwell area? If so I have recently been getting this also, so far have had no response to my thread, mine is a 4.6 on LPG though......

it sounds like its coming from the engine bay ,
may well be diesel knock , am going to have a look at it this weekend , will try and see if it stops when you accelerate past 3000 rpm

I had a 'death rattle' at 2200rpm, thought engine was fooked. Turned out to be diesel injection pipes rattling off each other. Check to make sure all the little plastic spacers are in place.
Another source of diesel rattle is if the pump is out of timing. but this should only happen if the pump has been taken off at some stage and not beeen timed proerly on replacement.
You haven't been fiddlin with your pump now have you :)

Come to think of it, mine has a rattle under hard accelaration at around 2500 to 3000. It's not very loud and I'm sure it's just something vibrating. I gave up looking for it as it's only there for a few seconds.

no not been fiddling with my pump lol , didnt get time to look at it today was fitting some new wheels and washijng it , so fingers crossed for some more sunshine tomorrow

have you solved your problem?
my dse is rattling after 1 or 2 km's of driving from 2200-3000rpm and it sounds like its from under the dashboard, but i havent found any source of sound from there so im quite confused :-/

If its an auto, the flexplate crack, sometimes called the intermediate drive plate.
Its the plate that bolts to the crankshaft then the torque converter...

Mine did the same, Check the heat deflecting plate ontop of the exhaust manifold, allthou the bolds securing it are tight, the holes are whorn out so the plate actualy sit loose then, there's a small little bracket that mounts onto the manifault itself holding the plate, its normaly cracked. Hope this will help you all.

i have just smashed that flex plate (drive plate ) an have had that rattel sound a wile.

i have bought one from a bmw e39 530D . and it fits:)
it is the same on a 525tds, 528,530D
