Another day another issue.

My car has developed a metallic rattle, it's there on tickover sort of on and off, sort of a clanking sound coming from underneath near the front. Not so much to think "oh s**t it's going to fall apart", and goes with blipping, but is there.

I'm thinking propshaft bearing or maybe just low gearbox oil or something. I know it's bloody stupid to post a description of a sound and ask for an explanation on an internet forum but nevertheless does this sound like a common P38 issue?

I also have a faint vibration on the over-run which I thought initially was to do with the new tyres that it same with, but I'm thinking now it's more likely to be something a little out of balance / un-damped. Vibration is most noticeable at about 70mph and reduces with speed so is not really detectable below 60.

If you have a propshaft making a noise on tickover you had better get under it and take a look. That won't be the propshaft but the other things could be.

Could be the underbody heat shields. Mine rattled like mad until I pulled them off the other day.

The RHS one was in four parts and at high speed flapped in the wind passing under the car and hit the bottom of the car. That felt like vibration until I discovered what it was.

Yep that is what i was thinking about when i said have a look underneath it. ;)

Does sound like a flex plate, hope its not but would advise you get it checked out before driving the car. When mine went the toque converter moved forward and its bolts were all that enabled the car to move. A few more miles and untold damage !

Get under it and take the 3 bolts securing the inspection plate on the bell housing that should give you a better idea if the flex plates shot...

As long as the cat wasn't caught up in the serpentine belt because they make a nice mess of blood and guts
