Ok,

So its been bugging me for a while,

On start up, it sounds like the gear box is rattling, until I depress the clutch at which point it doesn't resurface until starting the truck again,

Left to its own devices it also stops rattling after a few minutes,

Me thinks that when it had an engine change a bolt or two wasn't either put back or not tightened up properly

Ideas ?

When I was out laning with you last week I noticed that if I was in low ratio and restarted the engine it would shake a lot more than normal on start up, but fine if in high, didn't think anything of it though seems fine now.

Mine does this too (300 Disco). Quite a loud rattly noise from the gearbox area when cold, if the clutch is down it stops. After a few minutes it stops doing it totally.

Doesn't sound great so I'd also be interested to find out what is causing it.

Gearbox oil levels? / condition? starting with foot on clutch stops gear spin up.

Spigot bush / bearings past experience it squealed rather than rattled.
My 110 sometimes has a bit of a rattle on tick over when started but ok when clutch depressed so reckons thrust bearing / arm spigot a bit tired :)

Mine is slightly noisy, I've had new spigot bush, release bearing, HD fork replaced, new clutch, slave cylinder and push rod, maybe it a land rover quirk :D

Heat shield ?

Some models have a heat shield on the exhaust/cat/ underbody to protect ...

also sometimes one on the manifold near the turbo ... worth a look ...
