Hi
i have a 1996 p38 manual rangerover that gets a flat battery if left for 2 days without use.
can someone tell me would this problem possibly be the rf receiver ,as being a manual dont have the tell tell gear selector light glow as a give away
can someone advise

Have you considered the obvious like the battery may well be at fault? cold weather always brings in a flurry of dead batteries. Disconnect it and leave for 2 days and see if its the same.
 
many thanks for the idea of battery problem, have had battery checked ok, also there seems to be no lights or equipment left on
 
Disconnect battery neg or pos and put a multimeter in line on amps with everything turned off see if you are getting a current draw if more than a few miliiamps it will be enough to flat the battery over time Could be diode in alt etc HTSH
 
Are they many wireless internet users, security cameras or other wieless devices close by which could be on a similar RF and are 'waking up' the BECM on a regular basis, thus draining your battery?
 
Hi. Welcome to owning a P38. It is your BECM being woken up by yours or your neighbours wireless broad band or remote control garage door thingy.
I had the same problem, that's what brought me to this site. It is your rf receiver. Unplug it fer now and just lock the door with the key then you will have no flat battery problem. The real way to fix it is to buy the upgraded receiver from LR fer abart £150.00. Search this site fer more info. It has been covered abart 100 times.
Also go out to Rangie at night when all is quiet, look through the window with out opening anything and see if the little red light is glowing on the gear selector. If it is then the BECM is awake because of something nearby thus draining abart 2 amps from yer battery.
As said do a search on this good site and all will be revealed.
 
I think the easyest way to see if its the RF reciever is to disconect it for a few days (just unplug the arial behind right rear parcel shelf). If it charges ok with no problems after that, thats it! Dont forget to point your remote at right rear window up close to lock/unlock.
 
that's pretty much what I said mate cept in er long winded fashion.
if you just pull the arial plug from the receiver then you will have to point the remote at the back window real close. this might work, depends if the interference is strong or not. I had to totally disconnect the rf receiver and use the key in the front door. if you pull the plug the other side of the receiver then your remote will not work full stop.
 
had the same problem went to rr and they want £150 for a new rf receiver that probrably cost them about 70-80p to make, just remove the arial plug from the receiver, You have to be close to the right rear window for the remote to work but its curred my dead battery problem and i aint had to splash out 150 beer tokens
 
JUst wondering if people have the same problem when disconnecting the receiver, i have the aerial dissconnected but i find it still wakes up, so i have to remove the receiver completely, but when i do i cant start it it disables the engine when removed, so have to plug it back in to start it, is this the same as everyone else??
 
You might find that you have a signal to close. I know you can test for wake up. Do a search on rangerover.net to find out how ( i think ). You should only need to unplug the aerial. Try parking in a different place.
 
The problem lies with all the new broadband wireless routers that use the same frequency as the remote, and with every one going wireless these days there is a lot of interference and it will get worse as every internet sevice provider is now supplying these wireless routers with their broadband packages, this wasnt a prob when they first made the car as we didnt have wireless routers then just interference at places like airports, didn't have to diconnect my rf receiver as diconnecting the arial did the job looks like you may have to bite the bullet and get the new rf receiver that apparently does cure the problem but costs £150 or try parking in a diffrent place to reduce the Interference.

i had the same trouble recently, it was down to a dead cell in a 5 month old battery, been exchanged under gaurantee and all is now well.
alternator also changed but thats another thread (existing thread)
i was thnking it was the becm waking up and thought i was gona have all manner of reciever/reception troubles and it it was was the battery!
 
just fitted the updated rf receiver ywy500200 after the old one disconnected for 10 days started engine first time problem solved , now the vehicle does not remote lock only on the key. does this mean i have to get the remote keys reprogramed to the new frequency (315 mhz)
 
Interesting reading. My '98 P38 keeps having a a flat battery. I have fitted a new Varta battery but still after a couple of days parked up the battery is flat.I have disconnected the rf receiver and no difference.Taking the battery back tomorrow to get it checked but have a feeling it will be o.k. I read elsewhere on this forum that the L322 has a problem with the HEVAC fan staying on after the ignition has been switched off thus flattening the battery, is this something the P38 can suffer from because i'm sure i can here a faint noise behind the instrument cluster when the car is parked up and the key taken out. Once i've started it in the morning it's o.k for the rest of the day even after a short five minute spin around the block.If anyones got any ideas i'd love to here 'em because i'm getting fed up with having to start the big old lump with a set of mickey mouse jump leads connected to my Ford Capri,but that's another story!
 
I think the noise is yer fan. (The little one in the hole in the dash just above the radio.) It is timed to go off after a while when you shut ignition off.
Mine makes the same noise. Drove me crazy trying to locate it when my battery was going flat. Was my rf receiver. I was sad enough to sit in my RR for twenty minutes to wait fer the becm to go sleep and it did. So did the whirring noise you describe. Since totally unplugging the receiver on the feed side all is well.
