Range rover vogue gearbox issues

Hi guys, I've been searching for a while and have spoke to various specialists and can't get a definitive answer so I am looking for some advice! I have a range rover vogue 2007 3.6 v8 with the 6 speed ZF box, the issues I'm having are when going uphill the gearbox judders quite badly and the revs when driving on flat fluctuate about 3-400 rpm when under light load, now I have ordered a genuine ZF sump pan/filter and 9 litres of ZF lifeguard 6 to service it but I am not sure wether that will help or solve the issue at all or wether I have a more severe problem and need to recondition the gearbox/torque converter/mechatronics valve block....(gulp)

Has anybody had this issue or any experience with the gearboxes?

hi

i’ve got a D3 which i believe is the same gearbox , ZF 6hp 26

it sounds like a torque converter , however an oil change and filter certainly would be the best place to start , u will need a diagnostics to clear the adaptive setting after the oil change

firstly though have u had the codes read

do u know when the oil was last changed plse

as ur going to do the oil get 2 x tubes of Dr Tranny and inject that in at the same time, this can sometimes help with torque converters

might be an idea to check the oil level before draining it, so u can at least know if it’s low or not

have enclosed a link in the next post in how to check the level

Yeah it's the same box, I've had the codes read and there's nothing stored in there, also I've been told not to reset the settings as the gearbox will set all tolerances back to zero on worn parts which will supposedly in effect make the gearbox 'self destruct'

The sump pan is a bit damp so I checked the oil at the correct temperature and it was just over half a litre down so I topped it back up and it made no difference.

The dilemma is if I swap the oil and filter and it makes no difference then I've got to strip the box down and I've just wasted a new filter and a lot of very expensive oil!

I've heard the pressure solenoids on the mechatronic valve chest are trouble but spending £500 on a new set for possibly zero difference is a big gamble I think.
 
just thought , is ur sump pan the conversion kit so u don’t have to remove the gearbox cross member plse

ok and understand where ur coming from

haven’t heard that ref the adaptive but if you’ve been advised not to then indeed leave the adaptive bit alone

have u tried putting 2 x tubes Dr tranny in the box

No I havent, I might try it if I swap the oil out, I've read somewhere that the torque converter becomes "nackered" when the clutches in the gearbox wear and the debris from that clogs up the TC, I'm just not sure what to do as I've had so many opinions! I don't fancy stripping the box down just yet! As for the easier sump, I didn't know one was available? Is that specific for the D3?

i’m afraid i don’t know the gearbox inside out like that

Sorry it took so long but there is a slight update but not much has happened other than a lot of research, looking into the juddering people are saying it's the torque convertor lock up clutch, but when they put the car into sport or manual mode that lock up clutch is disabled thus stopping the juddering. Well I've tried that and it makes no difference whatsoever, it still judders at exactly the same times so I've got no idea what the problem with mine is. I also discovered the sump pan is damp so I took it to my mates garage, let it cool down for 2 hours then checked the gearbox level applying the rather strange instructions I found in a manual online, the gearbox was at the correct temperature and I'd been through park to drive and manual gears holding for a few seconds each time and the gearbox was around 0.5 - 0.75 litres below level. So after topping up I went for a drive and low and behold the problem was still there and hasn't got any better since. One thing I did notice is that the oil had a rather pungent smell, can't remember the exact colour but it was nothing like what was going in. Obviously I've only used the correct ZF Lifeguard 6 oil at stupid cost per litre. So if anyone out there has any suggestions I would be more than grateful!
