Hello everyone I'm about to buy yet another Range Rover after missing my past 4. The problem I've got is do I go for the td6 3.0 engine or the 3.6v8 the twin turbos have problems on the v8s how bad are they

Whilst either engine has its merits and problems, the MY07 onwards machines are miles better. The gearbox on the 3.6tdv8 is a 100x better than that used on the TD6. However its widely acknowledged that petrol models especially MY07 onwards are as reliable as things get with a Range Rover. Issues with TDV8 appear to center around oil leaking from turbos into intercoolers which can potentially cause hydraulic locking. However the performance must be night and day between the TD6 and TDV8, even the 3.6 goes OK

The TDV6 is a very sweet engine, goes nicely with a re-map too (Father has a sport) quieter and more powerful than a stock TD6. The TDV6 is belt driven unlike the TD6 (chain) and it's apparently a "body off job" although people claim to be able to change them without removing the body but it's tight. Overall the engine itself I would say the TD6 is the most reliable out of the lot but let down by the GM box which is made of cheese.

HTH

Tdv6 never available in a full fat Range Rover only a sport. I would be wary of it being a psa product but then i wouldn't buy a sport so not an engine I would come across!

The vogue is a spec of the L322 (or any other RR as it goes) I.e SE, HSE etc NOT a model.

Yes the TD6 only comes with the 5 speed GM Box, they tend to let go between the 80-100k mark and require RE-build/new box.

When do the v8 turbos let go

I don't think is so much of a case of ' when', I think your just unlucky if it/they do go.
Mind you saying that, it's not uncommon! Lovely engine when they are running though.
HTH.

As mentioned the Vogue is a trim level not a model, a common mistake so we can let you of. Yes all TD6's came with the chocolate gearbox, sadly its just not up to the demanding job of hauling a range rover around especially as many are used for towing (and rightly so). I bet few people ever read the handbook where it suggests that when towing a heavy weight that you should set of in low range to get it rolling before changing ratios on the move... I digress.

If it were me I would be looking at the petrols, they are generally less of a pain and have had a nicer life. I was considering a TDV8 for a brief time and I don't do many miles a year in the Range Rover so the fuel economy benefit was minimal. Plus if just one thing went wrong with the diesel it would have wiped out any saving in fuel for years to come. They all cost £500 a year to tax (post March 06) and even the oil burner is not brilliant on fuel. You might manage 25mpg on average from it, I'm told 30 is possible if you nurse it on a run. Conversely I'm driving my supercharged without a thought and its doing 20mpg.

After owning 3 BMW X5s , all petrol I wanted a L322 with the TD6 engine its a reliable engine , not quick nor particularly frugal........but in my opinion the best engine , yes the 5 speed GM box is its weak point but after a rebuild done correctly will last a long time again ( i get 28 MPG on a run driving it gently which to be fair is crap )

I praise whomever almighty's turn it is this week that I am, and shall remain to my natural end....a petrolhead!
Spared from the ugly spectre of domestic DERVs they are are a scourge, a modern anathema.
If they achieve fame it will be confined to a corridor, probably leading to an emergency exit.,,,, certainly not worthy of Le Grand Hall.

No apologies given to derv owners, at all, end off, speak to the hand.......

(How to make friends and influence people, :D I don't give 2 toilet sessions) ya filthy noisy fuks.
