Sport Range Rover sport dreaded EPB error

Hi everyone.
I have just acquired a Range Rover Sport HSE after being away from range rovers for the last 8 months with a Porsche Cayenne but the lure of Range Rover ownership was too much and being i have never had a sport before (previous had L322 and P38) I thought I would chance my arm.
I am now the proud owner of a HSE 2.7tdv6.
It has a few issues but that was part of the haggling price.
The first and major issue is the EPB warning is on and it appears the previous owner has used the overide cable under the switch.
I would like to fix it myself but if the fault proves to the module is may take to my local indy.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of localising the fault.
Do I need a specific code reader to read fault code and disable system?
Before checking the rear brake shoes

Diagnostics is really the only way forward. Blackbox Solutions probably cover your model and IMO are the best. (no affiliation)

I am surprised there is not an after market manual replacement

Hi

U need to relatch the cable inside the epb module that sits near the spare wheel, easier to remove the spare out of ur way

Normally have to rewind it, as per link

Before removing the main battery , Put the suspension into off road height then please DO NOT get underneath the landy without axle stands

when the emergency lever is pulled it pulls a cable out of the epb module which release the shoes

Also they may need setting up , here’s another link to show u how to do that

Diagnostics personally the gap iid is the best out there and this can be done without diagnostics

Plse let us all know how u get on , if u do this urself can save around a 1k saving from not going to a dealer

All the assistance is much appreciated.
Will check out the links and plan for a day of action with my 3 tonne trolley jack and heavy duty axel stands.
I think the fault may have happened because the guy left the car sitting for several months.
Brakes seized on???
I saw someone on eBay was doing an exchange refurbish service if the module proves to be fault.
Hoping it won't be that and it is not a pig to remove if it is.

A lot of problems with the epb is due to not being checked and serviced at the required times, because they are a pain to set up properly they get left and them the sh1t hits the fan as they say :(

That would have been nice , maybe the way the centre console was designed a normal handbrake would have ruined the look , lol

Or as the epb applies the handbrake to just the right degree they didn’t trust owners to apply a normal handbrake correctly

To be honest don’t use mine a lot mine as it’s an auto

Agreed, need to service mine sooner rather than later, had a glance at a guide kindly linked by @gstuart and it does look fairly involved for a weekend warrior.

Agreed , Must admit also want to check mine at some stage , to remove the discs so can check the shoes and clean them out, inc greasing the worm drive inside the epb module

You should use the EPB, it's designed to hold the weight of the car. Ever heard the expression "use it or loose it"?:rolleyes:

Here's what "Holds" the car when in park.....


The park brake AKA handbrake is designed to hold the weight of the car when parked....the gearbox is designed to do just that....change gears ;)

Would Use the epb on hills etc, or if I’m sitting in traffic for a while , don’t apply it when it’s parked on my drive which is flat , because I may not use the landy for over a month, but know what u mean if it’s never used it can seize up

Can you tell me if you need the diagnostic tool to clear the error on the dashboard or will it correct itself when the jam has been cleared in the EPB?
Looking to replace the discs pads and shoes and looking through your link the EPB can be unjammed in situ

Hi @markieboy123

I’ve heard different views regarding if the fault will clear on its own, u can at least fix the EPB without a diagnostic reader

However with regards to the replacement of epb shoes, a diagnostic reader has a special program to what’s called “ “dismount “ , which pulls the shoes in

It can be done without it, if u read though the bodsy brake bible, it’s best to disconnect the battery so that the epb isn’t applied when the discs are removed , it also tells u how to set them up

At the end of the day if u intend to keep the vehicle a code reader is a must , considering an average garage will charge between 60-100 every time to just plug it in , having ur own will pay for itself very quickly

The gap iid will do virtually everything a dealers diagnostic can do, currently are around £420 , Bluetooth version is best as u can use it via ur iPhone or iPad

always best to check everything out so that when u come to do the job u have plenty of knowledge beforehand

These EPB are quite simple. You need to service the rear brakes at least once a year, maybe twice.

A good blow out of the grime & dust & re-adjust the shoes. Adjusted correctly & the motor hardly moves for a full lock on.

If you're getting the screeching then it's usually too late & the module needs replacing.

It's a 2005 and it is auto.
Thanks again for the links gstuart.
I plan on taking my time doing this over the next weekend I have free.
Plan to get new discs pads and shoes up front so don't have to mess about later.
