Not interested in chipping, I removed the Power box and sold it, the car is quite quick enough as standard, I want it to tow without worry and last me out.:)

fair enough :)
I've never experienced a non chipped diesel (save for a rather dull test drive) but as I never really use the power in mine I expect it's roughly the same

I'd kindly refurb them for you Data, i think i have some 40 grit emery floating about somewhere, its probably beside the chocolate fire-guard and motortbike ashtray i was gonna send your way....

Well, there are indies over here, just that the closest is 70 miles away! But my mechanic who looks after my cars for the last 20 odd years is a resourceful type, though he did a lot of sucking in of his teeth when I told him what I'd bought!

:D:eek::p

Ok, just reviewing some info, as regards the coolant/overheating issues, how best can I check for past /ongoing problems? Any precautions I can take before setting out on return journey home?

A step by step guide would be great.........

R day - 6!

At the risk of repeating myself and another poster..........Check for water loss and excessive pressure. Take the car for a hard run and re-check the coolant level, it shouldnt have dropped. Make sure the top hose does not feel like a rock at the same time as well as bubbling in the coolant return

1. How can I tell if excessive pressure?

2. Top hose hardened from age or pressure?

3. The temp gauge needle would normally sit where on temp gauge?

4. When or do fans come on readily, general running or sat in traffic or towing only?

R Day - 3

Thanks

my advice,

1. telltale signs of water stains around header tank & surrounding areas

2. they run under pressure normally to lower boiling point

3. 12 oclock or fractionally below

4. very rarely unless under a lot of load/2hrs in traffic jam on red hot day maybe

I personally would ask him not to start it at all on the day of collection you need to start it from cold after standing all night if there is any sort of misfire on start up from cold which clears after say 45 seconds its 99% got head/liner problems;) also make sure it has antifreeze/summer coolant if no signs of either its been topped up with tap water regular. although this is not really advisable remove header cap dip your finger in & taste it, it should be sweet & bitter  & swill your mouth out with a 50p bottle of water :D

Thanks Wil......the most important info I've gleaned so far on the forum, which cements other nuggets as regards the whole coolant/cooling system issue. So if top hose soft, its not pressurising properly? Plus I assume check header tank before starting too!

I had also noted previously the asking for a cold start up too. So when you say misfire, its more of an uneven idling thing, having to rev it a bit til it smooths out or distinctive major spluttering?

Have asked for the cold start, no problem, the checklist is rather like the Alphabet at this stage...........
