Range rover P38 gearbox problem and possible dealer issue

Hi All,

I recently purchased a recon transfer box for my P38 Range Rover saving a small fortune plus doing a deal to get a refund if I sent the old one back. Patting myself on the back for some ingenuity I then went to my local Landrover dealer and asked them to fit/carry out the work. At this point I won't go into detail as to who the dealer is but over the years as dealers go they have been generally quite good albeit a little expensive which one would expect.

Anyway wanting the job done properly, the car is in all day and I get a call yesterday at around 4pm asking me whether I had ever had any problems with the gearbox as the cable appeared to be sticking and accessing gears was an issue. Bearing in mind when I drove the car over to the garage all I had was the grinding (chain slipping) from the transfer box and my auto gear selection has been fine - I have had the odd moment when every 3/4 months or so the computer popped up with a gearbox fault but on switching off/on again the fault cleared and I could drive perfectly normally. So, imagine my surprise when collecting the vehicle last night Landrover tell me my recon (newish) transfer box is all fine but they are showing a gearbox fault! When attempting to leave the dealership I start the car, gearlever in park, and the dash display tells me it is in reverse! Then on shifting down to D I cannot even move off the forecourt unless selecting 1,2,3 or R!

My question therefore is whilst I have admittedly had a random but pretty minor gearbox fault, has the changing of the transfer box to a new one upset/affected a minor problem which will need rectifying, or to put it bluntly have Landrover cocked up and I now need a recon gearbox as well! Lastly, where can I get one cheaply?

All advice/help appreciated.

I would tell them politely to check their records for your car and see if they have ever noted a gearbox fault. If they havent then, again politely, suggest that as it was OK when you drove it in, then it must be something that they have done, and that you expect them to fix it at no cost prior to your collection. It is, of course, possible that, coincidently, the fault occured at the same time, but your first approach should be that they fix it FOC. If they whinge, which they are likely to, then mention that you will go to trading standards, get an independant engineers report and that if it is considered to be their fault then you will want compensation to cover all the costs incurred.
Dont forget to put it all in writing after the initial chat.

I had a similar issue with the selector been slightly out and would be one gear down.

There is an adjuster down the side of the gearbox with a threaded bar with a piston and locking nut, best thing is to have someone move the selector from 1st to Park and loosen the nut then push the arm the rest of the way and keep adjusting one full turn until you can select 1st and Park.

do it slowly as you will get to a point where it will be one turn up and 1st will work or 1 turn down and Park will work but you need to make quarter turns and tighten the locking nut before you test it and it will slightly adjust between the two until you get to the point where 1st and Park both select.

Its a little tricky and tight but mine is fine after I adjusted it but each quarter add more pressure to the adjuster arm when you have to twist it back into the hole and put the split pin in.

I used a small nail to pop in and out of the hole each time it was tested from 1st to Park so I could quickly drop it in and out for adjusting.

They have damaged something. Get them to rectify it. Simple as that. They have probably let the box hang on the cable when changing the transfer box.
