Evening All,

I recently picked up an early range rover classic that has been turned into an off road trialer. It looks like an old build and sadly it was a two door originally. If only they knew at the time what it would be worth! She's got a 3.9 v8 with carb conversion. Sounds lovely.

Anyway, to the point!

I'm swapping out the rear axle for the d1 style with the shocks both on the front and not one either side as I'm sure the later style Is better for off roading. The original has pretty much rusted away (main reason I'm changing it) But it's standard height. I've got some 37" wheels I can put on it and a 4inch lift kit. Both laying around new old stock.

Question as its my first mainly off road only build, what else would it need?
I understand you can get spacers for the props now. Any ideas on size spacer needed for a 4" lift? Also do the trailing arms need to be modified in any way? Etc. I'm sure I will find out as I'm doing it but thought I would ask ahead of doing it all to save time. So I can order more bits if needed.

I will add a few pictures after this post so you can see it. Think it may have been built in the 80s looks like that style. But needs finishing.

Thank you in advance for any help or information.

Regards,

Ted

It came with the original 3.5 engine and manual box with overdrive as well.

That is/was a classic:eek:.

Oh well somebody else did it, you are just going to have fun with it so not going to hold that against you:).

Firstly I would say you wont need that OD, so that can be sold for some nice pennies for other goodies you may need:D.

Good luck with it and maybe consider starting a "project fred" :D.

I've just created a thread in the project section for it as well. Took a few days to get it running but it's running sweet as a nut now. Drives well too just needs a bit of TLC and a bit of love then she will make a nice little off roader

Rereading I don't know if I made it clear but it was an overdrive he was after.;)
I did assume that is what you meant, it is up for grabs if someone does need it. Open to offers etc. It won't be much use to me being on an off roader. I may keep the 4 speed box just incase the auto breaks. But I can take the overdrive off no problem.

Yes whoever did it originally certainly had a good go at it. I couldn't have brought myself to have done it. But I suppose when it was done they probably weren't worth anything.
If you were proposing to do it, to a 2 door no less, I'd suggest we find you a padded room... But it's long done now, may as well have some fun with the thing! (The thing is also my suggestion for what you call it)

Longer brake lines?
Do you know of any metal work shops with a cnc plasma cutter ? They could possibly cut some prop-shaft spacers for you? Or mod your props length?..

I can do any mods it need to do at work. That's not a problem, just having one of those moments as it's been a while since my last build.

Ah, the rare Fairey OD! I actually found one last week... Now it is waiting to be shipped from my collegues place in the UK to me. Cost me an arm, so, and it was the cheapest one I found. If it is in good enough shape, 800 pounds sounds like a reasonable price to ask it seems. And that seems to be on the cheap end of things.

Edit: I need a new hood now, the old one decided to loose the lock on the highway last week and the new inner wings material was too soft to retain it... Not sure if having it straped down to the front bumper is acceptable in the long run!
