KOOKY, you've hit the nail on the head. It's still a Rangie. It might have had more interior bits (I'll bow to RRB's vast knowledge in this) and maybe special paint but under the skin it's still the same collection of nuts and bolts.

So, is it worth the money? It's a second hand car so it's the mechanical condition and how it's been looked after that should determine the price.

My 99 T reg has the plaque on the door shuts on both passenger and drivers door which says "Land Rover - 1948 1998, Vogue 50, 73". Under the bonnet, a plaque with "Land Rover Special Vehicles, Lode Lane (etc)", the Paint Code is blank, it doesn't say Autobography anywhere on that plate.
Inside, the only thing bearing the Autobiography script is on the piece of wood surrounding where the VHS/DVD player would be if someone hadn't removed it! It does have Sony screens in the head rests (and all he wiring is there), it has a Phillips Car-in sat nav (non working, it ejects discs, including genuine Land Rover ones) then tells me there is no disc! Harman Kardon speaker thing in the back with the Range Rover 6CD changer in the bottom, which won't connect to the radio as the cable has a din plug, but no din plug on the back of the radio, which is the cassette/radio often seen for sale on e-bay.
The previous owner sold it as an Autobiography, which was neither here nor there, really,
as it has all the toys, if only they all worked. Oh, and it is on LPG, never had any problem with it, and regularly get 16mpg tank to tank on regular cross country runs to Oxford.
So, is it an Autobiography or ot? It certainly is a Vogue 50.
!

Probably not.but from what you say here I am wondering if the car works at all!,!!!just look at the engine, look basic electrical problems, EAS issues etc and forget for the rest....

Oh, yes, it works fine mechanically. All the basics are there, engine, gearbox, brakes, sweet as a nut. Suspension goes up and down as it should, and car looks a treat. Air con a bit iffy. LPG no probs at all. Radio splendid tone and looks a treat. Just some doubt as to whether it is an Autobiography or not, as it has been debadged at some time, no clue from bonnet or boot markings. But number 73 of Vogue 50 is good enough!

I'm looking to by a 1996 Range Rover 4.0SE Autobiography. The thing is i'm not sure if its a replica and i was wondering if anyone knew what would definatly tell me if the vehicle was a genuine autobiograpy?
Hi there, did you get sorted on this post, I`m buying a 1995 4.0 litre Autobiography tomorrow, I have asked the owner about badges and stuff they can`t recall any, however the logbook (v55) states it is a Autobiography, I will have a look myself when I get there, reading some of your replies from your post i`m a bit confused!!

Does anyone know of a list showing all the autobiography options that were available over the years?
There is a great book called Range Rover - The Second Generation by James Taylor

This has listed all the models with all the toys and all the colours and talks about special builds, limited models, different trims options etc etc....very good reference book!

Range Rover: The Second Generation Crowood AutoClassic: Amazon.co.uk: James Taylor: Books

And yes I am that much of a geek, I have a copy!

Hi, I own a P38 Autobiography.

The best way to tell is under the bonnet. There should be a Land Rover Special Vehicle Plaque, stating it is an Autobiography and you can check the number with any dealer.

They do make a 4.0L as this is a custom vehicle its built as you want it. I believe the 4.0L are more special as there are less of them, plus a better faster top speed engine.

Check the interior, it should all be real wood covering the centre console and if there is no sat nav it should have a Autobiography badge embeded into the wood next to the clock. The badge on the rear should be a propper solid one not a flat one.

There are lts of ways to spot a fake but you know when its teh real deal.

James

No engine modifications were carried out for P38 Autobiography models, Autobiography models have custom trim and equipment - but stock engines, the standard Autobiography was based on the 4.6 HSE. According to James Taylor's book, P38 autobiographies did not appear until 1997, anything prior to that is a fake or (unlikely) a prototype.

Dec 96 would be a 97 model year though? Just a thought!

Forgetting for a moment that I'm still not convinced there was ever a 4.0 Autobiography - let alone a diesel (I'm sure I could be wrong!) - the fact is the first Autobiography P38 did not run off the production line until spring 1997.

Good point on the 4.0 thing - James Taylors book supports that I think?
There is a great original Land Rover Video on You Tube about the Autobiography program.
Here it is in case not been spotted before:
