My brother has a Range Rover 1996 P38 and is having big BIG problems with it !!!!
???????Alarm System Fault ????????
EKA Code not working,
Key not recognised.
(new key ordered costing over £100) and key still won't work.
Interior lights and hazzard lights comming on, on their own.....
Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong???
Any one had the same problems ???
Any help would be much appreciated.......
 
it cud be - there are many freds on here concerning battery going flat/ecu probs/ starring/locking probs - i fink the fix is get the latest ECU - but others much more knowledgeable on RR's will be able to advise - in the mean time - do a search on ECU.

Providing the key has been supplied by a main Stealer to the VIN of the car it should work. The keys are cut in the U.K. and the fobs sent to HUF in Germany for programming I believe to match your VIN. Either the alarm ECU is not recognising the code or the BECM could be corrupt. The way it works is that a coil around the Ignition switch excites the fob to transmit it's signal to the alarm ECU which sends feedback that all is ok and this allows the engine ECU and BECM to allow engine start. If however the key has been bought off Egay or similar, there is no way it will be recognised as the VIN will not match and there is no way they can be be programmed unless they are sent via the main dealer. Security on P38's is better than Fort Knox!!
 
Thanks for your comments, the key was bought via a dealer, it had to be sent away for by post and it took about a week to come through. Im sure it was the correct key but unfortunaltely it just didnt work!!
 
I do believe (tell me if im wrong) i read someplace that key # 2 cant be re-programed you have to get 2 #1s? how true that is i don't know, it in rangiecom someplace

I have two No. 1's as the dealer said my origional was shot-which turned out wrong, it was o.k. Only one of them will operate remotely at a time. If I lock the car with the origional remotely,second remote will not work unless I insert it in the ignition & start the car, then the second will remotely lock and "Overrides" the origional and becomes the "Default" key. The wife has the spare. It's no big hassle because at least they both work. The fob bodies are different colours for I.D. purposes. Key 2 should work independantly as the memory seat settings, two of them, can be automatically selected by which key is used.
Hope this isn't too omplicated to understand as I had a heavy night last night!!!
 
I had a similar problem with mine but did not have the interior light turning itself on and off. it turned out to be the kids had been pressing the key fob buttons out of range off the car and this puts the fob and car out of sync. after a lot off trying and p...ing about and alarm fault lights showing. all i needed to do was put the key into the drivers door lock then lock and unlock the car manualy with the key. the instructions how to do it are in the owners book. i hope this helps.
 
I will tell my brother to look into it a bit more, he has got a rf receiver on order. I will let you know if it does the trick. (And what key works in the end!!) The original one or the new one !!!!
 
The P38 was supplied with around 4 keys when new. That said some people are kleptomaniacs when selling a motor and hold on to the keys, why I don't know as it just causes grief and considerable expense to the poor sod that buys it. I have been there- easy when you can pop down your local shoe repairers and get a spare key for a quid for your missus's micra, but as we all know-or have learnt the hard way £100+ for a key .aint no joke. Hope you kept a record of the locksetcode (Around 13 digits) which came with the key-you will need this if ever you have to get the BECM reprogrammed or faults related to the alarm reset.
