Range l322 strange gearbox issue

Damn son, you are nails !!
Make sure that tranny is strapped down to the jack and whatever is holding your RR up in the air stays up in the air.:)
 
As I am sure your all aware and most definitely very jealous, I have today met the legend that is bemble, he truely is a legend, really interesting guy to meet and what he doesn’t know about a gearbox ain’t worth knowing, I think he could refurb a box from 300 feet, blindfolded with his hands behind his back! He even showed me the inside of his TC!!! :p

I’m just praying it’s high enough!!! I have it on three sleepers that are 3 inches each so a 9inch lift in all... thought it looked really high but looking at the box which is the size of most French cars I’m not so sure anymore... got some straps that are rated to 250kg so they should be ok, just finishing my cup of tea, then it’s torch time! :cool:

Did you put it in off road height ?
If it comes to the worst and it won’t fit out from underneath, we lifted up the transmission with a trolley jack off of the tranny jack and supported it on blocks of wood and then removed the tranny jack and then dropped it back down onto a low level trolley but you could drop it onto it’s belly on hard board and a sheet or borrow your quilt and drag it out. If not you will have to strip it down under the RR, or at least take off the bell housing !

Pre March I would have been there and probably pushing you out of the way to get the job done.Cannot believe the time its taken me to replace my cylinder head and the recovery time afterwards.:eek: Did my manual Classic clutch in France years ago without a Jack! Wouldn't even think about it now the right equipment ;)
 
Ok so the box is out!!!! The tranny jack was a bit of a let down it didn’t have enough adjustment to angle the box out properly and then when pulled with the box lowered the wheels go every direction but where you want on the plus side I had plenty of room, managed to get the car in off road before loading on the ramps it only decided to go up once I started driving not sure why? The oil in the box was disgusting perhaps it looked worse in torchlight, the TC I think may be beyond saving as the bearing is rattling around inside not much you can see the splined shaft moving about 2mm as you shake the TC so will have to see what they say..... managed to drag the box off the jack and onto my work bench (the back of my van) so just got to spilt the transfer box off and start pulling the gearbox apart....

Sorry no photos guys - at midnight while wrestling with my stupid tranny jack under a freezing car in the pouring rain photos were the last thing on my mind and of course I could never compete with the photographic excellence of @holidaychicken.
I have just got off the phone with my roofer who has informed me that the scaffolders have arrive and apparently my Range Rover is in the way of where the scaffolding needs to go!! He then said “as it’s open can we just push it off the ramps!!” ERRR NO!!!
 
Get them to put the scaffold up round the car making a nice covered dry garage for you to work in sorted:D:D:D

Well done on getting the box out at that time of night in the rain, I hope a nice stiff drink to celebrate after was the order of the day.

Well done mate. What was the problem with the jack ? With our make shift one we just made a cradle as we only had a flat surface on the top and wheeled it straight back and then down but there was two of us and I can’t imagine doing it on my own as the transfer box was bad enough.
You can’t have lifted it on your own unless you ate Geoff Capes for breakfast !

Found this in my garage, Sorry it's to late to get the box out but if its of any use to get the box back in PM me. It fits on to a trolley jack with a 30mm hole for the pad. My jack it fitted to has now expired but you are welcome to borrow the adaptor.

Don't no if this helps when you put it back in but we made up a wooden cradle to hold on the sump and overlapped the motorcycle lift we were using which had just a flat top to it

The problem with the jack is the cradle isn’t The right size or shape so the contact area on the box is only the outer edges of the cradle and the strap that the jack has is useless the problem is that the strap is fixed to the cradle it runs from the bottom of the jack so as you lower the box it loosened off, if you put the strap around the cradle then it wouldn’t lower as the scissor part of the jack gets in the way so in the end I ripped the strap off and threw it as far as I could in a rather childish fit of rage and lowered the box without it as I had spent more time faffing with it than actually removing the box!! Once on the jack properly and lowered it was fairly easy to move about, realistically I should have left it and done it in the morning when I wasn’t as tired! But never the less I got the bloody thing out!! But would definitely suggest 2 people purely for safety really
