Freelander 2 (LR2) random twang - clang type noise..

..from the engine - TD4. Happens in the morning when cold and is gone when warm.
it is random and does not change with engine speed or load it would appear.
I am guessing a pressure relief valve in the power steering pump?

anyone seen this before?

so the noise changed to something that was more easy to find - the aux belt tensioner had started to fail and was springing in and out £80 later for anew belt and tensioner and the noise is gone. had it changed in under 30 minutes but took that again to get new screws and catches to re-attach the access panel..

yeah its a busy forum - like that. I have an interesting video the tensioner resembling a yo-yo but wasn't able to upload.
Another noise came in that i never noticed before, but it is more random and like a loose something on the engine. i sort of recognize it (big hollow type sound if that makes sense) but cant place where or why i heard it before.

its the good wifes car - shes happy im happy...

its back with a vengeance, only happens at high revs > 3K when idle and from about 2K when driving. Looking at the sticky steering post i think this is worth a check.
so steps tonight - check for surge of power steering fluid return in the header tank ( filter check) is it an easy job to clean or replace? ( lunch time googling)
Then remove the aux belt and see if the noise is gone and if there is any play in power steering, alternator or aircon. I should point out that i got the timing belt done in March.
Supposed to be going away this week towing a caravan around Ireland...
 
So got home the good wife was out and no reports of noise. By the time she got home the noise was there so only noisey when warm. Aux blet off noise gone. Pulled power steering header with the aim of a reverse flush to try and prove something. The fluid was that dark it was hard to tell the colour. I would say more red ie wrong colour for a fl2. emptied the tank and got it in the garage. Hmm no filter just a hole in the bottom. The manufacture date stamp on the header is 4 years younger than the jeep.
So plan of attack get a second hand pump to see us through the holidays then new pump tank and a fluid flush....
 
The power steering filter on the Freelander 2 reservoir is part of the reservoir. Yer need ter change the reservoir ter change the filter. Reverse flush may work but it's not something I would do myself. In comparison to a replacement rack, the reservoir is cheap. The filter is filtering the fluid. One would hope that saves other more eggspensive repairs like a rack change.
 
Thanks Hippo - wife came back last night and said noise is way worse and there's a power loss - thankfully brown trouser moment turned into red face moment - took it for a drive and it was a loud wooosh noise under acceleration with loss of power, yep you guessed it - split boost hose - the one just behind the power steering pump... lol - taped it up as a patch ( parcel tape is best for this i found out on a banger i used to drive) until i get one.
It was too late and i was too tired to test so hopefully today the reports will be all good. still going for a new header and fluid flush but.
so looks lie i had 2 issues first the tensioner then the boost hose split close behind, oh well learnt a bit more and didn't spend lots in fault finding..

Looking for a boost hose the short one attaches to the manifold and was told dealers only. - that'll be £115 + vat sir - sorry what, the hose is only about 5 inches long. I know but it comes as part of a kit you have to buy the complete assembly down to the inter-cooler.
got one ordered off ebay £17
