Take power from the solenoid? Do you mean starter solenoid? Surely then it would only come on when you are starting the vehicle? Or maybe I am wrong. What you want is a permanent live (fused) and an ignition live (i.e either tap into something that is only on when the ignition is on or connect to back of relevant part ignition switch. Or if you cant be bothered with having power to the stereo on ignition only, bridge the ignition and permanent live on the stereo.

Pics are useless really IMHO opinion of how to connect a stereo up as each stereo can vary to how the ISO connector is wired up...if you have the manual for it then it will say in there (although you can normally have a good guess if you havn't got the manual, i.e most ones I have come across are red perma power, yellow ignition, brown/black earth and the ones on the opposite block are speakers).

Lets see you speaker holder :)

Can you really hear a £4 wind up radio over the noise of a Series Land Rover?

Yes, power from the solenoid. Not the small terminal that's energised with the starter switch but the big terminal from the battery - can be a handy place to get unswitched positive (I hope its neg earth or there's a whole lot of fiddling needs doing). It's probably easier to take an extra connection from the battery terminal though.

Not a 2A but this may give you some ideas.
Radio was a Sony media player off ebay secondhand £18, only a couple of inches deep as it does not have a CD player but takes a usb memory stick that you can load music onto, sorry can`t remember model number.
Speakers again off ebay and cheap aerial that fits onto windscreen.
Went for media player type radio for size, don`t have anywhere to store CD`s and not sure they would play that well bouncing around in a Swb. If you look on ebay there are plenty of second hand radio`s and speaker`s cheap.
System works ok just need to reduce transmission noise which will make it easier to hear without having belting out at such a high level. Might try making a bulkhead similar to a fume screen to reduce noise and make cab easier to keep warm.
