Radio Issues

OK...A couple of things....

I had the original factory fitted Karmen Harden GPS/Radio system in my Freelander but the radio never worked properly, the signal would drop in and out almost like a mobile phone signal (?)...I never really used the sat nav, so I had the whole unit replaced (Treated myself and spent a small fortune on an all singing all dancing double din touch screen).. thinking it was that.....the radio is now worse than ever, :fighting: even with a booster plugged in...so by process of elimination I have had the aerial base and mast replaced (Land Rover Originals)...still nothing...can anyone shed any light on this....????? (before all the head lining is ripped out to replace the co-ax??

Secondly...trying to get the steering controls working I have the PC99-X91 with the patch lead and it doesn't fit, seems other people have had this issue too....does anyone pleeeeease know of another lead or solution.....


I won't even go there with the sun roof :-(

it should be possible to check the co-ax for breaks or shorts

If they exist chances are that its at one end or the other, and may not need to be stripped out entirely

well first off if you can get to the back of the radio, put a meter across the coaxial plug and see if it shows a dead short.

Then check that the center pin connects to the aerial socket - unscrew the aerial so you can get a connection to the live part.

Any really cheap analogue meter will do the basics

I'm not a Freelander owner but

I had a similar issue in a Merc van. Did all the checks and swapped the radio only to eventually find that there was a tiny amp in the aerial base and the supply had failed. The 'dead' amp was killing the signal. Anything like this in a Freelander set-up?

Doesn't seem to be, however it looks like broken cables are not unknown

First thing I would do would be to check it with an externally mounted antenna.

I have had an external aerial plugged in....it still didn't seem to pick up a signal...but since the radio has never really worked i'm not even sure where a good signal area is, but I'm told Radio 2 is a strong signal everywhere...so it throws doubt over the whole co-ax thing, unless the external aerial was a really crap one :-(....if I hadn't just spent £300 on a new head unit I would have put my foot through it by now :-fighting:

Sorted the issue by installing a DAB radio which is now perfect so bearing in mind I replaced everything except the coax I would guess it was that - wasted my money replacing the roof mount - but at least I didn't rip out the interior and unearth 201 new problems replacing the rest
