Hi Guys,

I wonder if anybody can give me a bit of advice please. I have a 51 plate Freelander, when I put the roof box on top, the Ariel goes underneath the box and I lose the radio stations.

I’m off on holiday soon and I would like to have the radio playing on the journey. Can anybody please tell me if I can get around this problem? I’m sure that others must have come up with this problem in the past.

Cut a hole in roof box for aerial to poke up through so it doesn’t lie underneath it or fit an aerial amplifier to the coax cable

Also check the ground on the aerial base as it may be poor causing the loss of signal
 
I'd check the ground connection at the base is clean and paint/corrosion free first. Cutting a hole in the box would be the second thing to do. ;)
 
Why not try moving the box back a bit or the aerial forward if it’s a bendy one. Another option would be an electronic aerial that sticks to the windscreen in the passenger corner, they’re not that expensive.
 
I'm hoping it will look a little less incongruous on a 3-door, where the aerial is close to the centre of the car :)
 
Not yet fitted the shark fin. The roof panel has a slight curvature, so the aerial will need modification. No biggie I think.

Here’s a couple of photos of it resting in place. What do you all think?

Sort of no response really - neither positive or negative, its just sort of there.

However, nice to see some lovely British des-reses - shame about the monstrosity in the attic!

It looks OK. It looks much better on the 3 door than the one that was fitted to my 5 door, when I got it. The 3 door aerial is behind the sunroof, but is in front of the aftermarket sunroof fitted to mine. I hated it, so replaced it with the original aerial, shortly after buying the car.

Couldn’t be anywhere other than the UK could it? Classic inter-war architecture! Lol

I’m rather neutral on this too to be honest. Generally I’d prefer standard parts. The replacement secondhand standard aerial cane without the rubber base seal and it’s different to the one on the car :rolleyes:

The shark fin idea is a solution to the problem of putting stuff on the roof: it won’t get in the way... it’s only stuck on, so if I don’t like it, it’s easy enough to remove the double-sided adhesive tape :)

Absolutely, very British scene.

Our place we sold when we moved over here was built just after the war, a lot squarer than pre war. Originally they, 4 pairs of almost identical semis, were built as 2 beds with downstairs bathrooms. They've virtually all had a bathroom and 3rd bed built above the entrance door side which was originally single story. Because it was just after the war, rationing meant you could either have parquet flooring or a pitched roof - but not both. Our pair had the parquet and the roof over the bedrooms was concrete that I recon was poured over plywood boards cos it was all wonky! Nice house though, out in the burbs, behind it was the Selsdon Park Hotel where 1 on the teams always used to stay before the FA cup final.

I don't like the standard placement of the aerial on the 5 door. But with both body styles, the aerial is in the way of item's on the roof rack. I'm tempted to move the location completely, and go with a rear shark fin aerial instead. The only stumbling block, is what to do with the hole in the roof, where the standard aerial used to be.
 
Braise in a circle filler (and re-spray the roof), or just a grommet Nodge?

If you were to fit a light bar on the front of the roof, might prove a handy place through which to run the wire?
