Radiator oil cooler leak 200Tdi

Hi
I have just replaced (well it was a while ago now

) my ancient radiator/oil cooler in my 200Tdi 90 and all seemed to be going well. However there seems to be oil weeping from where the female threaded connector comes out of the cooler i.e. the leak is from the radiator itself rather than where the oil pipe is connected.

The only thing I can thing of is to disconnect the two pipes and try and nip up the connectors in the radiator before reconnecting the oil pipes.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

I would remove pipes, unscrew the nipples from the cooler, inspect to see which method was used to seal the threads, O ring/washer/sealant (I dunno) and make good. PTFE tape will fix it I suspect, cheap and it works.

I had come to the conclusion this was the answer - another pool of oil on the garage floor

I was wondering about PTFE tape too - I guess it should be ok with hot oil?

They show the connectors removed from the cooler and they threadlock them in place.

Ive got one of those cheapy plastic rads lying in the shed (it leaked oil into coolant from new) just had a look and the oil cooler unions arent screwed into the cooler like the genuine ones ,theres a nut to undo and the the threads look to be part of the cooler so not sure how you could stop the leak if its coming from there

I got an old metal one off ebay and had that recored (it was on a project and i had thrown the original away by time i had tried the new one !)

So the fitting is moulded into the plastic during manufacture?
Nasty.....
If my original (slightly knackered) metal rad dies I'll get it recored methinks.

You may be able to stop the leak with ptfe / silicone behind the nut but it does look like the unions are part of the tube that carrys the oil

Im sure i was unlucky but i could not recommend one of those plastic rads ,a recore on the old one or spend the extra on an all metal one either ali or copper

So yesterday I removed the fan/shroud for access and undid the oil pipe connections. I then removed the connectors from the rad, tightened up the backnuts then re-fitted the connectors with PTFE tape. I reconnected the oil pipes with PTFE tape, refitted the fan and shroud and went for a drive and so far no oil leaks
