Radiator Flush Problems

Hi all.

I've been servicing my 2004 Freelander td4. Filters, oils etc.
and I decided that I would flush the radiator and replace the coolant seeing as I've no record of it ever being done.

Now, my problem is when I took off the bottom hose I got loads out of it. When it had done draining I Ran thebhose through the expansion tank until it ran clear, took the top hose off and ran the hose pipe through it until clear.
Reconnected everything, half filled the system (guess work), put some Holts radiator flush in, topped up with water and started her up and let her fast idle for 10 mins (bled the system too) then let it all cool down until it was cold.
Then I took the bottom hose off again to let it drain out.
The thing is, not as much water came out this time...
I can't figure out why?

I ran the hose through it all again and all seemed good.

So, I put all the pipes back on and filled with coolant/antifreeze (bleeding along the way).

However, I only managed to get about 4 litres in...

I ran the car for a good 20 mins afterwards to get the the water circulating. I had the heater on full too.

But, the level still did not drop.

Is this normal? What's gone on?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When you did the flush you have blocked up a bleed pipe, small hose on system or a bleed bypass (a small channel, i.e. around the thermostat) You should carefully drain the system into a measuring container, then using a old antifreeze can (plastic) you can pour the drained fluid to measure it . In the handbook it will tell you the exact amount to fully top it up. You should get out nearly the amount. but there can be additional drain bungs. Once the system is drained then you can premix the antifreeze then slowly top it back up with the exact amount, you can then start to bleed the system as your topping it. once you have all the coolant in, then you should check it daily until you have confidence that there are no air locks or leaks.
 
Container : Get a old white plastic 25Litre container then using a jig saw cut it through the handle at 90 degrees and long ways around. I use these everytime.
 
If I drain it again. It won't unblock the blockage (if there is one) so I'll probably only get out what I pit in (about 4 litres) and then only be able to put 4 litres back in. Won't I?
 
according to googlification the TD4 has a capacity from dry of 5.5L, I would have though about 4 would be right for refilling when its not fully dry, theres bound to be some left in there.
