R380 gear box drain plug help pleeeze

Struggling to undo 32 mm drain plug on the gear box for crying out loud I'm nearly rounding the buggier off, I'm using a 32 mm spanner cos I couldn't get socket in due to the propshaft, any advise welcome.
 
Mine was tight as **** as well. Could try some plus gas or drop the prop and use a socket. Be much easier than rounding it!

In the end mine came off with brute force
 
Drop the prop off the TB. then use a socket on the plug - try tightening a tiny bit first - and possibly shocking it tight, then loose, and repeat.... it'll give in at some point - but, IME, some of them appear not to have been out during this century, and be self glued into the case.

And.... Make absolutely certain you get the filler plug out BEFORE you drain the oil... !!
 
Ive given up for this evening after trying again and getting nowhere, thinking about driving it to a landi mechanic I know and see if he will help, if not will probably go prop shaft off as you've mentioned and try a socket on it

Use a 6 point spanner or socket rather than 12 point as you will dramatically reduce the chances of rounding the bolt. Also while you have given up for a while get a new drain bolt for it, don't put the damaged one back in or you may be asking for trouble at the next oil change.
 
Thanks I bought a washer before I attempted removing it, and yes when I do eventually remove it there's no way it's going back on, getting a new one tomorrow. I bought a 32mm spanner from Halfords to remove it but unfortunately it's a twelve point and it's damaged the head of the drain plug abit
 
I had the same problem with mine. Even with a 6 point spanner, it was rock solid. I had tried holding the spanner on to the plug whilst persuading it with a hammer. One of the hits sounded quite a bit duller than the others. I'm sure that the scar will fade a bit with time. I ended up getting the spanner as horizontal as possible but still with some travel left..... right kids, don't try this at home (risk of severe injury / death). I eased my bottle jack up to the opposite end of the spanner. One pump, wait. Check everything is still ok (spanner fully on the plug, jack securely under the end of the spanner, if any doubt, lowered, re-positioned and started again). One pump, wait. The landy was rising and then it gently lowered. I still couldn't move the plug and so used the jack again, job done. I'm just telling you what I did. You're all grown ups..... most of you are grown ups..... ok some of you may be slightly grown up. Just bear in mind if that spanner flies off it will be travelling at speed and it has some weight to it. At best it will hurt. At worst it won't.
 
It's annoying isn't it the simplest of jobs turn into a sodding nightmare, hats off to you for getting yours off, hope I don't have to go to that extreme lol.

Since this is a recurring problem, it does make me wonder how ****ing tight do "mechanics" think this plug needs to be ?!?!?!? :rolleyes:

( and when I say "mechanic" - I mean the pratt who tightened it up with a breaker bar previous to any of our efforts :mad:)
 
I'm going to angle grind my 32 halfords socket down to just under 30 mm saves taking prop off, will keep spraying plug with WD today and attempt again this evening.
 
Right , so you are making it shorter then.......:p

Although that looks like a flank drive ( My halfords advanced sockets are ) 12 sided socket, a 6 sided as said may be better.

Will try WD progress to shock spray if that don't work and will try to get a 6 sided socket today, see if machine mart sell em as don't think halfords do
