Hi Guys,

so, its raining, a lot! and my sunroof has finally started to leak.

I haven't got the time to take the lining out and do a proper fix at the moment.

Is there any temporary fixes I could apply in the meantime?

I was thinking maybe smear some Vaseline around the edge of the sunroof, or maybe some ductape (but worried if I go the tape root that it'll pull the paint off when i take it off).

Has any 1 got any suggestions?

Thanks

Mines the manual one, cleaned the glass and the rubber seal and smeared grease on it, so far no more leaks but not opened it since I did it five months ago.

Fastest temp fix is to gaffer tape around the sunroof, high tack tape spanning from the glass to the metal. Leaves a bitch of a residue but it works.

Ultimately you need to get the window frames out, and rebond them to the roof - leaks are rarely due to the seals and more often than not due to failed or crap from the factory bonding of the frame with the roof.

so the leak is through the frame instead of the seal round the window?

Usually, or both.

There's a drip tray under the seal to catch the inevitable water which will get by the seal, attached to this at both front corners is a drain tube which runs down the A-pillar. It's common for these tubes to get blocked and/or for the brittle plastic connector where they attach to break off the drip tray, result is either the try backs up and overflows, or the water runs out of the broken corners.

All in all, quick fix, tape it all up above. Proper fix, remove headlining, completely remove the entire frames, fit new seals, sikaflex the frames to the roof, fix the drain tube connectors, & blow out the drain tubes.

Thanks mate, looks like i'll be taping it up this evening then, and doing a proper fix when the weather improves and I have more time

That makes two of us mine just started to leak god dame it lol

I couldn't find my tape, so i've just smeared some vaseline around the frame and all round the rubber seal for now, but don't know if it's worked because it's stopped raining lol ... i'm sure we'll get some more soon!

Mine had a broken drain, repaired with an old pen (35 years old minimum) and slow setting araldite

Temp fix is clear bath silicone seal round the frame to roof, cut the nozzle really small and put a good bead all round, it will last maybe 2 months before UV breaks it down, won,t affect the paint and will pull off easy when you do the job properly.

The collecting trays leak through the screws that hold the sunroof together. On ours we put rubber sealing washers under the screw heads to stop any leakage.

The 'seal' to the roof is a 5mm diameter sealant tape that is woefully inadequate. I took both my roofs out in 2010, fitted new rubber seals, cleaned both roofs and the roof of the car, sat them on Sikaflex 221 and left a weight on them while it cured.

There are seals on the roof bars that don't work as well. The roof bars are bolted to a frame inside the roof itself, there are foam 'seals' between the foot and the roof, but it's a pretty poor arrangement.

Mine have been goof for 6 years now, and the one we have just bought is having the same treatment as soon as I get time to strip it down and do it properly.

ah, maybe my roof bars that are leaking too, i will have to check them

I had mine repaired by Surrey Sunroofs, excellent service, he came to my home, spent a complete day, stripping and resealing, cost £300 with 2 year guarantee , mind you now have problems leaking around windscreen, but the guy said he will come and help sort that out no charge. He did explain though that the drains in the sun roof should only get water if the roof has been opened, other than that water should not get in there.

That's correct, all these tales of blocked drains makes me wonder how the leaves etc get in there? Our original D2 V8 had been stood 2 years but the drains and tray were clean.

Newest one we will strip out soon and I'll report back on what I find.

Peter

My drains are clear. It rained the other day and I had no leaks, so the vaseline round the frame, it'll do for now until I have the time to remove the roof lining

Whatever works, getting into a car with soggy seats and a lake on the center console is **** :D

it sure is! I put my phone on the centre console and the water used to drip off the sunroof winder and land on it, or if I went round a corner the water would fly off the winder, and depending on which way I went it would either end up on my lap or my partners lol

I have mine to do on the 'new' D2 V8, the headlining was pretty rough but picked up a new one for £150, so that will be going in once I have sealed the sunroofs.

Also will be doing the roof bar seals, the standard LR foam pad isn't that effective, it needs sealant as well.
