From St Helens? That's a bloody long and very expensive journey on a tow truck.

Something that I definitely wouldn't suggest or condone would be to join the AA (other recovery services are available) registered to your address, wait a few days and then "break down when visiting family in St Helens" and ask for a tow home... because that would be dishonest and fraudulent!

In all seriousness, a 4 hour recovery plus food and accommodation and a couple of days wasted must be getting close to the cost of a full day's labour at a local independent garage?


Come to think of it, will a breakdown/recovery service tow a vehicle that distance in one journey? That's a very long day for the poor recovery guy!

If you can wait until next week, I will be able to tell you exactly how much that would cost, because my Landy is in for that, plus a few other things, at the moment!
 
If it were me, and time was not an issue, I would remove the gearbox myself (or local independent, depending on skills, tools and willingness to get dirty) and send it off for inspection/repair rather than full overhaul/rebuild.

Same with the transfer box, if there is definitely anything wrong with it?

the job will only take a day so food accommodation ect is not needed in that sense , good point on registering it to my address ! dident think of that , breakdown companies will put it anywhere you want to , my mate who attended the lz bash had a recovery from there home 200+miles with one transfer from one recovery service to another which was free as he had cover

as for parts shes able to get a recon gearbox from ashcrofts which is £495 ( vat??)

recon transfer box from a bloke by me for £225 no VAT ,3 personal friends have had these with good feedback

clutch is £90ish
other small parts say £100

so £1200ish in parts before labour if it went to a garage , id imagine the job would be minimum £500 labour

time is an issue with this one im afraid , plus with complete rebuild you have peace of mind which she needs as a daily driver and having had the **** taken by garages who charge for jobs not done at eye watering prices, ( all the oils were supposed to have been topped up a few weeks ago but were not )

as for transfer box bad oil leak,unknown milage and diff lock condition and heavy backlash

Four hours to you, plus setup, chatting, drinking tea, so let's assume a full day's work, followed by a four hour drive home sounds like a rough day of travelling for Sarah?

I'm sure it's doable, but I certainly wouldn't fancy doing it in one day, free labour or not.

If you were a real friend, you would drive to her to do the work ;)

no she would travel the night before , job would be done the next day and travel home the day after ,

however for my own reasons I would not and could not travel to her , also I wouldent do it on the floor, theres a ramp and full workshop where I am

Of course, you have a workshop, lucky bugger!

In that case, AA membership is likely to be the cheapest option.... Did I mention that this would definitely not be something that I would encourage? ;)

yup that makes all the difference ! makes the job easy and much quicker , as its a commercial vehicle workshop for HGV'S it has all the big tools for stubbon fixings, and an 8 ton 4 post ramp which actually I can fit both my defenders on and lift at the same time ! :D

I suggested she gets the cover from her insurance company or something along them lines as they always do " onward travel " so will take your vehicle anywhere in the UK such as my mates series

have had 3 recoveries in my yellow 90 alone through mine this year :)

Might just be worth checking that they do onward travel from home. Usually onward travel requires you to be away from home, otherwise you need home start, which would then be a tow to the nearest garage.

that's what im looking for is onward travel , she says her current policy only tows to nearest garage so does anyone have any suggestions or links to companies that will provide onward travel no matter what?
 
RAC say that they will only tow up to 10 miles from home, but nationwide recovery (optional extra) to a single address (not necessarily home) if you are more that 1/4 of a mile from home.

So I think she will need something like an RAC policy with the Nationwide Recovery option, and will need to be more than 1/4 of a mike from home when she breaks down.

Note that she actually wants national recovery, not onward travel. Onward travel is for travel without your vehicle, so hire car etc, whereas national recovery is for a tow to anywhere in the UK.
