Freelander 1 Question about temp. instrument

Hi everyone!
Sorry for my really bad english, i ll do mt best...
My name is Yiannis, i am from Greece and i have an SE 1.8.
I use an OBD instrument via my phone, to see the real temp of the coolant because, the vehicle 's instrument, rises up until the middle and stays there.
Is this normal? Other owners of freelander in Greece, reports the same problem and they talk about damaged temp instrument. I don't believe that Rover, puts damaged instruments in their cars... Finaly, i can trust the vehicle 's instrument?

Does it show cold when the engine is cold?

If it does show cold when the engine is cold, and goes to the normal mid way position once it's hot, then what is the problem?
If the engine is at the normal running temperature, then why should the gauge show anything different?

I'm confused at the question.:confused:

If anything in the temperature monitoring system is faulty, then the gauge goes to the top, the high temperature light come on and the fans come on full speed.
 
Agreed, is the gauge starts off 'cold' then moves to the center as the engine warms up and stays there, then everything is normal. I believe the center of the gauge represents the range of acceptable operating temperatures. Therefore as the engine's temperature varies as it will do in normal operation, but expected temperatures, the gauge will not move. It only moves up or down from its normal position if the engine is not running within its expected operating range.

Are there not 2 temperature sensors on the K Series - 1 for the ECU and another for the gauge?

If so would the ODB data be showing what the gauge sensor is seeing?
 
If i understand, the complaint is that the temperature gauge does not show temperate, but only cold, normal and too hot, where normal can be anywhere from 80-110c at a guess.
This is normal behaviour, the obd information will give the real temperature

That's correct. The gauge is "controlled" so it displays normal when the engine is above 74°C and below 116°C, which is considered to be within the normal operating range for the engine.

Correct. It's designed to provide a warning, if the gauge isn't at the normal point.

Only up to 2000MY. After the 2001MY update, only 1 temperature sensor is fitted, as the ECU started sending temperature data on a data bus after that update. ;)

You have right about my question. I just wonder, why the position of the needle, don't follow the coolant temp that, according to my phone, is between 88-100 degrees.
